Summary
Colin Bridgerton isn’t as oblivious as the ton made him out to be. Hidden below the charm, the smiles and the flirting was a highly perceptive man. A man who may not know the secrets of the world, but certainly knew women. And he knew the woman that stands before him, as god was his witness - and the church they were about to make the short travel to would attest - he knew Penelope. He knew of the love she bore for him, and yet here he was.
Watching as she readied for her wedding day. To his brother.

Summary
Colin sat in the large family room of Aubrey hall and felt the same dread. His lungs heavy, his heart hammering against his chest and fear deep within his bones. There was no storm, no waves, no sea to swallow him whole.
Just the sight of Penelope and Benedict.
His brother.
With Penelope, who never had been, and never would be his.
She was now Penelope Bridgerton.
Penelope Benedict Bridgerton.

Summary
Penelope’s hand shook as she folded the letter. In all the correspondence they’d had for the last two years Colin had never asked about her and Benedict. It was an invisible barrier he seemed to want to maintain; happy to hear about the children, and their general welfare as a couple, but never anything too personal. Too intimate.
And now he was asking her for the story. The story she’d wished to tell him the day he’d come to see her before her wedding, looking forlorn and bitter. The story she’d wished to tell him when he was so angry in 1826. The story she’d wished to tell him in so many letters, where his pain was palpable but hidden.
Colin was pulling at the strings now, ready to drop the barrier.
Colin finally comes back to England, and asks an important question to both his brother and his brother's wife.

Summary
“That day changed a lot, Pen,” Benedict said seriously, a languid smile on his face, “I remember thinking if some small shrub of bluebells can make you so happy then I didn’t want to stop making you happy.”
She didn’t know what to say, she had learnt - over the course of her eight and twenty years - that keeping things closer to her heart was best. No way to be crushed if you do not expect much.
And so, while he was faster and better and more open with his words - she was faster, better and more open with her actions.

Summary
“Did you love him?”
Penelope had asked herself that question for years, and only in the last few years did she truly think she knew the answer herself. “I think I did.” She said, keeping eye contact with Benedict as he smiled sadly and looked down. “I loved him like a whisper in the summer rain, a fleeting ember in the night, but soon to vanish into the warmth of dawn. I loved him as a girl loves a boy. I am certain my love for him is very different from my love for you.”
“Do you… think you love him now?”

Summary
“I know you miss Colin, I miss him too, mother.” Benedict said softly, sounding so many years younger than he ever had before, “He may be a man of seven and thirty but he is still my little brother. He is still the boy I taught to climb trees, cheat at cards, play pall mall, smoke cheroot and steal Anthony’s good whiskey. I love him, I miss him. But I cannot carry this blame, I cannot feel guilt for my family, for my child, for the children we will have.”
Violet finally cracks at Colin's distance after the events of part 2.

Summary
Colin stood in the quiet anteroom for a moment.
He thought of waves, and of being adrift, and of all the years he had spent looking for something solid to hold onto. He thought of a kiss that tasted of honey and salt. He thought of unsent letters, and India in the summer, and a child with auburn hair he had dreamed of as his own. He thought of his brother's arms, fierce and imperfect. He thought of Anthony's hand on his shoulder.
He had loved her since he was young enough not to know what love cost. He would love her still, in whatever quiet and diminished way, until he could not love anything at all. That is simply what it is.
In another life, Penelope would have been his.
