“Snap out of it,” Andrew says, simple again like it’s easy, and pushes hard fingertips into his skin until finally, finally Kevin can breathe, can fight the sick roll of his stomach and he shuts his eyes, focuses on the warmth of Andrew’s palm until it’s gone again. He pulls away and Kevin hears the press of the bed as he stands up. “Let’s go.”

“Coach says he’s an amateur, hasn’t played more than a season. There’s no reason to believe that he fits into your perfect imaginary little world," Andrew says.
“He plays like he’s got nothing else,” Kevin answers. “I’ve seen his tapes, I’ve shown them to Coach, I’ve said it over and over but the board won’t listen to me.” And its refreshing to hear Kevin blame his problems on someone other than himself or Andrew.
“When I get him here they will see. He’s going to be Court and he’ll thank me for it.”

“What?” Kevin's voice sounds off even to him and he knows that Andrew will notice and he knows that Andrew will say something and his breath feels like thick liquid in his chest because he can’t think of anything he’ll say that will make this better.
He makes the mistake of looking up, of seeing Andrew’s smile like a slap, and Kevin feels too taut, too wrong, too fucking close.

“I’m not angry,” Andrew contradicted. “No, I’m surprised he did not tell me regardless of what he told you. He knows how hard I try to keep him safe and he makes it harder on purpose, Coach.”
