Summary
Isma the Kind, knight of the Pale King, is entrusted with care of an odd, papery child called only a Vessel, with the explicit instructions to not show it any love or affection. Of course she dotes on it; she *is* Isma the Kind, after all.
Meanwhile, her found sister Ze’mer is head-over-heels for the heiress of the xenophobic Mantis tribe, Saoirse. The forbidden romance only grows when Saoirse’s aunts attempt to bar her from seeing the knight in question.
However, at the same time, the Mantis Lords are beginning to question if what they thought they knew was right, especially as the middleborn lord grapples with her growing empathy for the nightclub singer Marissa, currently trapped in an abusive relationship with the Hive Queen Vespa.

Summary
Six months after the events of Paper Crafted Onion Pets, Dryya and her family are doing fine. Ze’mer and Saoirse got married, Marissa’s recovering from her abusive relationship with Vespa, and Squib is as happy as can be.
Yeah, that won’t last. Ze’mer gets a letter saying her biological family is coming back, but her elation quickly turns to exasperation once she realizes her fam has a lot to judge her for. Dryya fears she’ll no longer be able to treat Ze’mer as her daughter now that her real mom’s back in the picture.
Meanwhile, Marissa struggles to convince Reva to accept her into the family, but it’s a long, slow process, and her life isn’t made any easier by her brother Xero considering assassinating the king.
Lastly, Reva has a lot to think about, especially as the anniversary of her husband’s death approaches and Saoirse’s child starts asking her some questions. Is it finally time for her to put down her weapons and accept her new family? Or should she keep clinging to the past in hopes that it’ll spare her any undue pain?

Summary
Dryya, a perfectionist, with more awards and accolades than anyone else in the City of Tears. Hegemol, a small-town worker who never dreamed of living a life of luxury. Isma, a young Mosskin, orphaned at a young age, forced out of the church she calls home. Ogrim, a happy-go-lucky inhabitant of the City’s slums, head-over-heels for a certain knight. And Ze’mer, not even an adult yet, living a rather peaceful life with her nomadic tribe.
The five are suddenly thrust into life in perceived luxury when they are scouted by the Pale King to become his knights. Unfortunately, working under him is far less glamorous than they thought it would be. The only way for them to get through this is by relying on each other.
This fic is part of my Hime AU Series, but as it is a prequel, it is easily accessible to anyone who hasn’t read my previous works (though it would be very cool if you did read them lol)
