Quentin Beck took Peter Parker 1 year, 1 month, and 8 days ago. That’s 396 days since he saw May. 397 days since he saw Tony. 400 days since he saw Ned and MJ. It would have been 396, just the same as May, if Peter had made it to school that day. But he’d been lured into an alley by the frightful screams of a man asking for help, too damn selfless to have minded his own business and kept going. He knows, of course, that it wasn’t his fault. That it was the right thing to do, that it could have been somebody in danger.
But it wasn’t.
It’s been 396 days.

Summary
The explanations are on the tip of his tongue when he pushes the door open, ready to lie and deceive the man who’s spent so long manipulating and gaslighting him.
But when he opens the door, nobody’s there.
Peter steps inside tentatively, eyebrows furrowing. He checks the bathroom, checks the kitchen and the other bathroom and even puts on his coat and shoes to check outside, just in case he’d passed out or something on his way in. Peter doesn’t even need to step off the porch, however, because the car isn’t there.
Beck never came home last night.

Summary
For the first time, he has a real chance of escape. Suddenly, it doesn’t feel like a dream. It doesn’t seem as though being with his family is some far away or unattainable goal. He has a goddamn chance.
When Beck steps forward, wrapping him in a tight embrace, Peter hugs back. He gives the biggest, most genuine and heartfelt hug he’s ever delivered to his captor.
Because the man doesn’t know it yet, but he just gave Peter the best gift he’s ever received.

He holds the handgun defensively, looking ready to shoot anything that comes through the door.

Peter grips the polished sink, straightening himself into a standing position. When he raises his head, however, he’s met with his reflection. His horrible, soul crushing reflection. He never liked looking in mirrors back there. Too often he became a shell of himself, so caught up in the motions of playing along and surviving that he lost who he was. Seeing a reflection, or those horrible photographs Beck insisted on taking and hung up around the house just… It dwindled his hope more and more each time he was forced to notice the pieces of him that were chipping away.
And now, he’s home. There’s so much hope for the future and so many good things to take in that he feels angry when he looks at himself. The bags under his eyes and sodden expression don’t reflect the joy he should be feeling. Why isn’t he okay? How come the memories of what happened have replaced the weight of those things actually happening?
Is there something wrong with him?

Part of him wants to rethink all of this, a voice (probably Pepper’s) tells him to hang back and reevaluate this situation, to sit down and properly talk this through with his support system.
But he overrides that voice by stepping forward and abruptly entering the room.Tony remains silent, doesn’t greet the man or announce his presence. It seems to take a second for Beck to register who it is, and his expression changes from shock, to fear, to anger in a matter of seconds, like he can’t decide what to feel.
“Look who it fucking is,” He spits.

But he can’t deny how much he’s already struggling. His body has been on the defense for so fucking long, and the more time he’s spending at home the more apparent it becomes that his brain is firmly stuck in a state of survival. Peter finds himself habitually putting distance between himself and others, even Tony and May. He takes too long to respond to even the simplest of questions because he’s carefully going over his response to make sure there’s nothing that could upset them or set them off. Sometimes he doesn’t answer at all, falling into a period of silence that can last hours. He covers himself with his arms, stands in positions that don’t compliment his better features so he’s noticed less. That, and so many more habits he was forced to pick up in order to reduce the pain Beck inflicted on him.
He knows that threat is gone. He knows May and Tony would never, ever do anything to hurt him. But he can’t seem to shake the fear.

Summary
They sit in silence and just breathe for a while, the cold morning air turning their noses red and exhales into visible white puffs. May’s, slow and collected. Tony’s, quick but steady. And Peter’s, fast and uneven but not panicked, just… alert. Anxious. Okay, a little terrified, but he shouldn’t be, so he’s not. He’s not. They’re just sitting outside the compound on a bench, there is absolutely, positively nothing else to it.
Being outside feels good, it really does, and he knows he’s safer here than anywhere else. Tony’s got the best surveillance tech in the world and Beck is being held in a facility with security levels meant for enhanced supervillains, for christ’s sake.
But he stares out at the field, and all he expects to see is a purple glimmer.
