Summary
Steve startles, *hard,* the razor falling to the floor as he yelps, practically leaping out of the chair. His eyes are wild, almost manic, when they meet Hopper’s, and glazed with unshed tears.
Hopper doesn’t know where to start.
Steve does—with deflection. “Oh, shit,” he says, voice thin and shaky. “I’m late to pick up the rugrats, aren’t I?"OR
Steve and Hopper have a hard conversation about how exactly you cope with shit when the world keeps trying to end on you and your huddle of teenage friends.

Summary
So he takes a slow breath, clears his throat, and says, “Ms. Byers?” His voice isn’t as steady as he’d hoped for. There’s an unmistakable waver to it that makes Steve’s ears go red.
“Steve?” She says, and she sounds immediately more awake. “Are you alright, honey?”
The endearment makes Steve’s chest feel raw. He doesn’t remember his mother ever calling him *honey,* or *sweetheart,* or any of the other things he hears parents call their kids, even the weird ones like Hopper’s affectionate nickname of “Weasel” for El.After Steve wakes up from a nightmare, he struggles to hold it together and to keep his promise to Hopper. Joyce and Hopper won't let him deal with it alone.
