“My old man was an asshole, and my whole life I thought I would be glad of the day he was finally gone.” Steve finally started, and this time Eddie does feel startled by the sudden confession being made, but of course that was no secret to either of the Munson men. John Harrington was in fact an asshole and Steve has been so much better off without the man in his life, both him and his wife who never lifted a single finger to keep her only son safe.

He doesn’t listen to what his uncle says, instead far too focused on Steve in that moment; his boyfriend, his baby, sounded hurt and scared. Two things that he never wanted to ever be associated with the younger man ever again, hates the tremble in the other man’s voice when it had sounded through the Radio. “Hey, baby. I’m here, what’s going on?” Is what Eddie can find himself saying, wanting to give his partner the reassurance yet also wanting to know what was happening to get the younger man in the state that he was in.
“H-He’s gonna- He’s gonna kill me.”
And oh God, everything inside of Eddie just froze.

Because Hopper had almost been too late.
He had been too late.
Steve wasn’t even breathing when Hopper had busted down the front door of the Harrington house, stumbling forward and being greeted with a scene that he doesn’t think he could forget for as long as he lived.

“Oh darling, what’s going on in that beautiful mind of yours?” Questioned the curly haired man, and Steve wishes he could put it into words what’s going on in his head right now.
“Can I braid your hair?” He asks instead, and he expects to get questioned more or for Eddie to try and keep them on topic, but that isn’t at all the reality that he is faced with right now. Instead, Eddie smiles so softly and filled with nothing but understanding as he nods his head in silent agreement because he knows how Steve’s mind works.

“Tommy called me today, he wanted to try and be friends again.”

Steve pauses and smiles softly before he answers. “For loving me.” Is the response that he gets, and Eddie’s gaze softens into something filled with pure unadulterated love that he holds for the man sitting pretty on the couch in front of him. The corners of his mouth twitch upwards as he responds.
“You never need to thank me for that. I do it happily, lovely.”

“You know what, good. Your son is too good to be in a place like this.” That was Wayne now, who moves over to stand beside Steve and place a reassuring hand on the kid’s shoulder, causing the younger man to look over at him with a small confused frown. “I’ve told you before, mine and Eddie’s home will always be yours.” Wayne tells Steve, voice lowered so that only Steve could hear what it was that he was saying; and he watches as the younger man takes a shuddering breath while his eyes fill with tears.

It’s the sound of one of the kid’s voices that causes all four of the adults to look over at the door as it creeks open, seeing Max poke her head in through the door. And when the door is pushed open even more, everyone can see all of the kids gathered with Robin standing behind them. She smiles sheepishly as she gives a little wave before making her way into the room and standing beside her girlfriend. “Sorry, I tried to keep them out but they were worried about you.” She explained, and Steve couldn’t even be annoyed if he wanted to, because looking at the kid’s faces he can see how worried they were.

“I wish you were worth loving, Steven.” She whispers, and a moment after those words just hang in the air between them Maria is placing the bottle back onto the table with unsteady movements. She’s leaning back down on the couch, laying her body out and resting her head on the armrest of the black leather seat. Steve pushes himself up to his feet as his mother’s eyes slip shut, fluttering to a close as he grabs the throw blanket draped on the back of the couch, carefully placing it over his mother. Maria smiles at him before falling asleep, dead to the world around her and the suffering of her only child.
“I wish I was worth loving too, mama.” Steve’s voice wobbles.

“I’ll talk to you later, Barry, my son just walked in the door.”
For a moment Steve doesn’t react to the words until they actually hit him and he looks around the kitchen and into the living room at the front door, but he doesn’t see neither Will nor Jonathan entering in behind him. As far as he knows, Jonathan is out somewhere with Argyle and Mike is having a day out with El and Max, so who was Joyce talking about?
