Summary
The winter wind, which had howled around his train and yanked menacingly at Kakeru’s scarf as he made his way through town, disappears abruptly when he steps over the threshold of the old building. Kakeru shivers, despite the warm air.
Or, Kakeru is sent to exorcise a ghost from an abandoned dorm building scheduled for demolition. What he finds instead is a spirit in need of his help.

Summary
Kakeru learns that his running idol is leaving Aotake Publishing Co. in the middle of a bath, the day after he runs the New Year’s ekiden for the first time. From the main room of their shared athletes’ dorm he hears Joji shout, The ogre is leaving—? and Kakeru startles so badly he dunks himself and sends lukewarm bathwater splashing all over the floor.

Summary
The drop from the atmosphere through the long port tunnel to dock is nothing like what Haiji keeps dreaming of, but the swoop in his stomach and the pressure in his lungs that knocks the air right out of his chest is almost the same. Nothing will ever be quite like racing, but this is pretty close.

Summary
Haiji doesn’t look up, because his face is covered in snot and tears, and if he looks up, Fujioka will see that. And it would have been fine, except that in the last month Haiji got thrown off his horse mid-race for the first time, and Fujioka Kazuma won the Tokyo Daishōten. So Haiji keeps his face buried in his arms and says, with a voice like he’s been punched in the face, “What do you want, Fujioka?”

Summary
He’s seen the guy before. Spindly like a runner, an unassuming shock of brown hair, a regular fighter that never seems to catch a break. Grey. The odds against him were bad when Kakeru first started coming to Hanaji’s, and they’re astronomical now. A few weeks ago, Kakeru won a couple hundred betting against him. He’s never had so little money he’s had to bet on Grey or leave, before.

“It’s not worth much,” Haiji tells him, “the original piece.”
“Eight million credits,” Fujioka counters, without looking at him. Haiji doubts he’s been studying up. He probably knew that already, along with the exact creation date of the original, a detailed biography of the calligrapher, and a slew of other details, down to the particular source of the ink. Haiji had only learned as much as he needed about the piece to recreate it exactly.
