"But the clock is nice...Jisoo has made sure to keep up with the tuning so its little melody never becomes grating. It’s nice. It’s a shame it only lasts four chimes.
His father had been the one to teach him how to tune it. They’d taken it apart at the table, all the tiny gears and screws and moving pieces. Even now, there’s one note missing throughout the melody, a hole in the symphony where little seven-year-old Jisoo had lost the corresponding bell and cried about it for what felt like hours. His father had knelt down and consoled him, and then told him that their kingdom was just like this clock—intricate, interwoven, fragile. Its roots are deep, its core durable, but every loss will be felt, will alter it irreversibly even as it continues to tick. So every part must be taken care of.
They’d put the clock back together, piece by delicate piece till it was whole again, but Jisoo can still pick out that missing note. Every time, and this time too. It’s never felt quite so empty."
