Summary
Joel turns and peers cautiously down the alley. In the fading light he can make out three figures, teenage boys if he had to guess, in a semi-circle around a kneeling figure. Their head turns and Joel catches sight of a brown ponytail between the boys’ legs, a flash of a knife gripped in a hand.
One of them steps forward and kicks her in the shoulder, sending her sprawling backwards. She scrambles back to her feet, knife outstretched in front of her, teeth bared. If she wasn’t so goddamn small, Joel would think she was more than capable of handling herself against these guys, but they’ve each got probably half a foot and fifty pounds on her, and he finds himself walking closer.

Summary
Joel’s seat moves a bit, indicating that someone has sat down next to him. There’s no overtly offensive smells coming from them, so that’s a small blessing, but he doesn’t open his eyes. Please let them not be chatty, please let them just sit there for the next ten hours and leave him the fuck alone.
The bus starts rolling from the station, the noise level cresting briefly and then dropping back down again, and Joel finally opens his eyes, chancing a glance over at the person sitting next to him.
Scratch that – the kid sitting next to him.

Summary
Lisa comes by to collect his empty glasses, not that Joel really notices. He’s too busy unlocking his phone and fumbling through opening the browser app. His fingers feel thick, heavy, and it takes him more tries than it should to get a search window open and type his query in. But he manages, eyes crossing slightly as he looks through the options that have come up from his search for bus tickets.

“No, no, just listen - listen!” Rob stumbles backwards as Joel advances, the door to their ramshackle cabin swinging open. “We don’t have the cards we promised, but we have something! Let me just - let me just show you.”
He practically trips over his own feet to get to one of the other doors; Joel follows him almost leisurely.
Rob throws the door open - a shuffling and clanging sound emanates from within - and despite his better instincts, Joel finds himself curious. He steps over the threshold and turns to the right, hand going tight on his knife –
