Summary
When Theo was thirteen, he stole a car and drove to the beach three hours after his first kill.
The last time Liam had been to the beach on a chilly day had been when he was twelve years old. He’d been some type of little monster-human then, fleeing his own crime scene.

"You were seventeen. You didn't deserve to die."
Theo's body holds itself very still. Doesn't stiffen, but holds its silence and listens.
Liam weeps and weeps against Theo, tears hot, mouth gaping, lungs shuddering for breath.
"I was seventeen," Liam cries. He cracks and loses his voice. "I don't deserve to die."

"I don't think you’ll come easily to my side. Oh, no, no. Flea market negotiation styles don’t work on you, either. I know your strengths, Theo, and I’d be stupid to play right into your hand. So while I’ll run and get you a sandwich, or fetch you a water bottle if you ask me nicely, nothing you say is going to convince me to untie you from that table until we’ve made some tangible progress.”
“Damn,” Theo rasps. When he peels back his cracked lips, he can taste the blood between his teeth. “And I thought you were here to make friends.”
Tamora looks like she’s about to whip out a hand and slice him somewhere on his slightly singed skin just for that comment, but at the last second she refrains. She goes on, “Electrocution…waterboarding…deprivation of stimuli…those are all ordinary for you. We can skip past those and jump right into the advanced stuff, can’t we?”

Summary
"We're a total mismatch. She's a teacher's pet. I'm a socially maladjusted disaster."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence in my taste in friends," Mason deadpans.
Leah whacks him. "She listens to cool music! She could teach AP Bio with, like, her eyes closed. She cooks and plays the piano and helps out with Student Ambassadors and she's head of the D&D club and she's responsible enough to have a cat."
Mason sighs dreamily. "I know, right? She's the yin to your yang."
That comment earns him a whack on the other arm. Leah all but yells, "She wears bomber jackets to school events and I ate—fucking—chocolate chips and lettuce for breakfast this morning!"
