Summary
The Master Emerald goes to great lengths to keep its guardian safe and happy. The bond shared between them is unique, and the Emerald wards off any unpleasant things that may bother the echidna--whether that means keeping him free from illness, or going to the trouble of removing unhappy thoughts. A task it has done multiple times.
It's been weeks since the Master Emerald stole Knuckles' memories away. Since then, the guardian has been going about his business, oblivious to the gaping hole in his history. But there are clues. Signs that everything may not be as picturesque as it otherwise may seem.
When his friends haven't heard from him in a while, Amy decides to wrangle Tails and Sonic to head up to Angel Island and check on him. What they're met with is a very unfriendly echidna.

Knuckles stood at the base of the Emerald shrine, arms crossed and brow furrowed as he watched Tails scurry about the Master Emerald, taking readings and notes on the energy output. The echidna wasn’t all that keen on letting anyone that close to the giant gem, considering he’d just gotten it back from the latest greedy villain who’d snatched it for their own gain, but despite everything, he trusted Tails completely. And he would be able to tell if the Emerald decided it had had enough of the fox’s curiosity.
Besides, the kit and Sonic had gone to great lengths, and great peril, to help rescue the Master Emerald. There were only a handful of people Knuckles trusted with the gem, and the hedgehog and fox were at the top of that short list.

Knuckles’ grip tightened on the Discman, and he had to force himself to relax. He glanced down at it, nestled in his large mitt, covered with little scratches and stickers for bands he had never heard of. Evidence of a life of regular use.
It had been Wade’s. He’d given it to Knuckles a few months ago, since the echidna didn’t have a phone or any convenient way to listen to the Jammerz CDs Wade had made him.
“I pass it to you, my warrior master,” Wade had said in a deeper voice as he handed it to Knuckles. “May you rock out to your jams whenever your heart desires.”
A little smile curled Knuckles’ lip. His jams. He’d never had jams before. Not until Wade.
The smile dropped, and his throat tightened.
He turned the music up.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Wade wasn’t supposed to be gone.
