Summary
The cage was made of gold, real gold, but it was only a small comfort. While Ranpo’s crow-brain loved the shine of the bars, especially as deprived of shiny objects to hoard as it was, it was still, above all, a cage.
He had been in the cage for as long as he could remember, with nothing but the three thin blankets he had been allowed to nest with and the shine of the gold that caged him to appeal to his instincts.
At 14 the young avian should have been learning to fly with his flock, exploring outside of the nest for the first time, but instead he was in a cage.

Summary
Suddenly the cloth was lifted and the cage opened and Yosano could just momentarily see where she was before she launched herself from the cage and flapped her wings as fast as she could.
It looked somewhat like a wedding, it must have been how humans did it. Yosano had been there for her parents' wedding, though she didn't remember much.
Her small wings were not yet ready to fly, but she forced them to carry her several meters above and away from the humans below in a rush of panicked adrenaline before they gave up and she was forced into a shaky glide.
The two normal doves that had also been released continued to fly upwards, Yosano wished she could follow them.

Summary
When Ranpo woke up it wasn’t in his cage like his sleepy mind expected. Instead of cold bars and stale air, he was surrounded by warmth, wind rushing past his body in a way that, despite how foreign it was, felt natural.
He cracked his eyes open, at first seeing nothing but green fabric, then he saw them, the massive white wings of a snowy owl.

Summary
An avian could typically outrun a human, even without flight, their leg shape, talons and tail allowed them to run faster than any human could hope to match.
Through a blizzard however, an avians advantages became their downfall.
Yosano was at a disadvantage, and she knew it.
Suddenly, a black blur shot out from the whiteout, slamming straight into the human’s side with a screech.
The human staggered back, hands lifting to hit at whatever had latched onto them.
“Ranpo!” She yelled, a smile stretching across her features.
One of his talons was latched around the humans arm, his claws grabbed viciously at their head and his jaws snapped at whatever was closest. She could see the desperation in his every move, nothing like the clean efficiency of hunting. He was clawing for whatever he could reach, claws reaching for eyes and pulling hair, he snapped at their neck like he was going to rip their throat out with his teeth.
The man’s hand got too close to his mouth, Ranpo bit down, she could see the dangerous grin on his face as blood welled up around his teeth.
