Apollo had almost resigned himself to being god, general, administrator, and reluctant prison overseer - but the poison-green eyes of the captured mermaid threatened to send all his carefully maintained illusions into upheaval.

Percy was an eagle.
Without wings or claws, Percy had somehow become an eagle.
"Focus."
“I,” she began haltingly. “I was …” trying to avoid sleep, “trying to detect any pursuers. When my hearing sharpened. And I could suddenly overhear … birds.”
The rustle of feathers, the flutter of leaves, the whistle of the wind through the slats, and the screeching of the train wheels on the rails.
The metronome beating a steady, artificial rhythm where Apollo’s heart should have been.
“I can hear things,” she finished pathetically.
“In moments of terrible stress,” Apollo glanced around their banal surroundings and amended, “or moments of great paranoia, demigods are liable to direct their untapped potential into cultivating their senses for a power-up. You’re transitioning – from human to something more … demigodly. You’re literally growing more sensory receptors. But your brain–” Apollo shrugged as if the state of her pitifully mortal brain matter was a foregone conclusion. “Brains are delicate. Elastic, but given to self-preservation. It’ll be a long time if ever until you adapt to your senses.”Series

“I went to our apartment, but the landlady had never heard our name. I called my mom’s phone, but someone else picked up. I stole the attendance books from my school, but my class didn’t have my name. And then I looked at the newspaper.”
“And?” Apollo queried weakly.
Percy shrugged helplessly. “The date was a bit wrong.”
“Lost some time?” Apollo inquired intelligently. “The Labyrinth is known for misleading its victims through time and space.”
Wryly, the woman remarked, “I’d say so. Though it’s a bit much to send me back six years, don’t you think?”
"Maybe they printed the date wrong?" Apollo suggested hopelessly.
"The Empire State Building still being there was kind of a dead giveaway,” Percy insisted.
The first flickers of trepidation shot across Apollo's vision. “What do you mean?” he asked suspiciously.
“You know,” she replied flippantly. “Standing tall as a monument of modernity and not crumbled to rubble after an earthquake.”
A hollow opened up inside Apollo’s chest.
Earthquakes couldn’t bring down Olympus.
Not natural ones.

“Are you stalking me?” Percy blurted out.
The look of distaste that crossed Apollo’s face then made him flush with regret.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that considering I was here first?” the god asked, a sneer to his lips as if he’d smelled something repugnant.
Percy hadn’t followed Apollo to this college. But if he had known that this course was taught by the god who'd once loved him and now couldn't bear to be in the same location as him? Yes, Percy would have signed up solely for a glimpse of Apollo’s face.
