Summary
There were a couple of things that you had little to no way of knowing unless you stepped out of the TARDIS: the specific date (not just the year), the weather, and if you had landed in the middle of a battle.
Some of those would prove to be problematic to both the Doctor and Donna very soon.
TL;DR: Another adventure gets postponed when the Doctor accidentally gets shot, and Donna helps them tend to it.
