Summary
When Lucy is little—maybe eight or nine—she is obsessed with the ending of the movie. She doesn't know why. She draws pictures of the dog and hangs them on her wall; begins to wear her long hair in a braid like the schoolteacher; and decides that she likes American history the most of all her school subjects. Each time the final minutes of 'A Man and His Dog' play, she sits unblinking, watching as Cooper Howard undoes the schoolteacher's braid, tangles his fingers in the thick of it, and kisses her while the dog lies at their feet.
"That Cooper Howard is a good lookin' guy, isn't he?" her dad says.
"I like him," Lucy says back. "He's nice."

she stops. bites the swell of her bottom lip with her straight white teeth. her eyes fall briefly to the floor, hesitating, before flickering back up, looking at cooper from under her lashes. she makes a right pretty picture—her flushed skin dewy with sweat and her low ponytail disheveled—and for a wild moment, cooper thinks that she's finally going to do it.

"You look happy," Lucy says she continues to peer up at him. She's got one hand wrapped around his bare ankle, right below the cuff of his tailored slacks, his toes digging into the plush rug. "Tell me?"
Cooper takes a slow sip of his whiskey, ice clinking delicately. It's a little smokey, a little spicy, a little sweet. Oak and pepper and vanilla. He lets the complex flavors linger for a moment before setting the glass upon the brass drink table next to him. He then fits his palm to Lucy's jaw, the tips of his fingers disappearing into the thick tangle of her hair.
"Just thinkin' about how beautiful you are, sunshine," he says.
