Summary
Because Nico is only half watching his surroundings, there is nothing to stop him from colliding headlong with someone else. Nico’s balance is pretty good, so though he sways in place he manages to steady himself after a moment, but the person he knocked into isn’t quite so lucky; he lets out a disgruntled squawk and spins his arms like a pinwheel, then falls backwards onto his butt, knocking up a cloud of sand.
“Oh,” Nico says. “Oops.”
He’s intending to leave it at that with Heather still MIA, but the boy he knocked into appears to be around his age. That shouldn’t be a reason to let Heather take off with her little rucksack, but Nico always struggles with it when he’s looking at a kid, and the kid he’s looking at has wide, bright blue, earnest eyes that are shining suspiciously close to the way Arlo’s were when Nico left just now.
Ughhhhh.

Nico runs into a strange, compelling boy on a trip to the market.

Summary
Only to watch Vash crumple to the ground, only a yard or two away from him, body placed directly between Wolfwood and the gun pointed at his chest.
Time stops. Or seems to. Wolfwood becomes vividly, almost painfully aware of the sensation of his own heartbeat, stuttering uselessly against his ribcage as this overwhelming heat rises from his stomach and spikes through his damn chest. His hands clench at his sides, and for a moment he is frozen, unable to do anything but watch Vash soar towards the ground, his prosthetic arm extended to soften the fall.
Somehow Wolfwood manages to blink. Then his feet and hands are moving. Everything else happens in flashes: He closes the distance. He catches Vash before he hits the ground. His gun is back in his hand and he’s firing it, once to knock the offending weapon away and once to incapacitate its user. He doesn’t check to see if the bullet hits home, if it’s lethal or nonlethal. In fact, Wolfwood can barely feel his own skin, much less hear or see.

No real point in being a hired bodyguard if the guy you're meant to protect throws himself in between you and danger.

Summary
Far be it for Wolfwood judge anybody else, but it can’t be comfortable lying out on the pavement like that. He swings off Angelina’s back and wanders over, his helmet tucked under his arm. At a closer distance, he sees that the man is blond, lanky, dressed in a red sweatshirt and black jeans. His eyes are closed, lashes long. There’s a beauty mark on his left cheek and though it’s closer to morning than night and the sun set hours ago, the golden hoop in his left ear catches a streetlamp and sparkles when Wolfwood comes to a stop.
His hair is… eccentric. Spiked up in a way that Wolfwood wouldn’t have expected, even with the guy lying down. He’s cushioning his head with his right arm. His left, draped over his side, is mostly covered by the sleeves of his sweatshirt, but the hand that pokes out appears to be made of fibreglass, with articulated joints. A prosthetic.
“Oh,” Wolfwood says, and blinks. “You’re the neighbour.”
---
Wolfwood lives a simple, sweet life, albeit with something missing. Everything starts to make sense when he meets his weirdly familiar neighbour.

Summary
He’s rather tall even without that obnoxious cross, dressed ostentatiously in a black suit over a white button down. The jacket hangs open, but he’s done his buttons up all the way to the collar, which can’t be comfortable in the heat. The suit isn’t really what makes him stick out so much as the shock of blond hair on his head, straw yellow and done in the most obnoxious pointy hairstyle, sticking upright as if defying gravity save for a few strands which hang in front of his stark blue eyes.
He’s also smiling, wide and eager, as if he didn’t just get picked up out of the desert. He beelines for Midvalley, managing to keep his balance surprisingly well as the bus takes off, dropping into a bit of a slouch to meet the saxophonist’s eyes.
“You’re the ones who saved me, right?” he asks, his eyes darting over to Midvalley’s partner. Hoppered is a bit of an oddball in appearance—Wolfwood had certainly done a double take when they first met—so it is a mite impressive that this man doesn’t even baulk, only smiling wider.

Summary
Vash shoots him a threadbare smile regardless before he turns and starts to unbutton his coat. Wolfwood takes that as his cue to look away and give the man some damn privacy, though from his position, he can hear Vash going through the motions of getting changed, and it does… give him some pause, he supposes.
“You don’t care that I can see you doing that?” Wolfwood can’t help asking.
“Nothing you haven’t seen before,” comes Vash’s tired response. “Would you rather I used the bathroom?”
“Doesn’t make a difference to me,” and it doesn’t, for the most part, but, “just would’ve figured you’d be more… I dunno, cautious about who you take your armour off around.”
Vash straightens up at that, sweatshirt balled up around his elbows. He smiles before he pulls it on over his head. “You’re not going to hurt me, Wolfwood.”
---
Vash and Wolfwood share a bed, which in itself isn’t so much of an issue as what it necessitates. Wolfwood doesn’t understand how Vash can be so carefree around a known killer.

Summary
“Woah!” Wolfwood’s hands fly, perhaps instinctively, to catch the kid’s back. (Antonio, Vash recognises; Tony for short. Vash was there when his mother was pregnant, but hadn’t been able to make it for the birth. He’s growing pretty well.) “Hey, bud, what’s—”
Tony is upset beyond the point of coherent speech, already crying as he fists his hands in the collar of Wolfwood’s sweater. Wolfwood looks openly aghast, lowering down into a crouch to set him on his feet as he listens to Tony babble, and Vash’s eyes drop to his hands. They’ve adjusted now that Tony’s on the ground, hovering his back rather than holding it, and they tremble slightly, his fingers twitching like he’d like to place them back down.
He doesn’t, though.
---
Vash notices that Wolfwood is great with kids, but always keeps his hands as far away from them as possible.

Summary
But even if Vash took Wolfwood’s “betrayal” and subsequent rescue out of the equation entirely—Wolfwood would still be his friend. This is the man who helped him save his home, who stood at his side through towns that chased him out with stones, who slung an arm over his shoulders and sat by him when Meryl wouldn’t even look his way. This man has seen Vash at his absolute lowest, has had his back in ways nobody has in over a hundred years. They’re friends. The idea that Vash wouldn’t want to help him—that it’s not important—
“Tell me that you can handle it, then,” Vash demands. “If you have it under control, I’ll leave you be and let you take care of it yourself.”
“I—” Wolfwood’s gaze darts away again. “I’ll have to.”
“That’s not what I’m asking for,” Vash insists. “Look me in the eyes, Wolfwood. Tell me you’re walking off to something that isn’t going to kill you.”
---
Vash catches Wolfwood in the nick of time, right before he leaves for December.
