Without Piper to whisper to whenever Percy does something particularly sinful or his hands linger on her in a way she’s certain means more than it probably does, it’s difficult to concentrate on the actual workout. “You look like you want to murder that quiche,” someone says as they sit down next to her. Annabeth looks up, not really needing to, since she knows that voice like the back of her hand.
“Jackson.” She nods her head toward him.
“So tell me, Chase,” he says, handing her a glass of wine. “What did that quiche ever do to you?”
Annabeth snorts. “Please, as if the name isn’t reason enough. Keesh.” She over-pronunciates the word with a grimace. “Just call it a pie and be done with it.”

Summary
Stable, meaning nothing is actively on fire but the building is still definitely burning somewhere.
Percy, stuck long-term in a hospital battling cancer, copes with dark humor and dread until he meets Annabeth, a girl whose father is in cardiac care, and their daily elevator encounters become the one steady, hopeful part of his life. As her father recovers and prepares to leave, Percy is forced to confront not just his uncertain prognosis, but the pain of caring deeply for someone who gets to walk out of the hospital when he likely won’t.
Hospitals create this weird gravitational pull. People collide in elevators and lobbies and suddenly you know things about each other that most strangers don’t. You know diagnoses. You know surgery counts. You know who sleeps and who doesn’t. It’s intimate in the worst way.
