By the time Edwin Payne turned twenty two, he had spent much more time on land than he had in the sea. While he loved his upbringing in the coastal waters off of Scotland and Ireland, it hadn’t been a surprise to anyone in his family that he chose to go ashore. From the moment Edwin had discovered books, the sea could hold no allure. The Great War had limited Edwin’s wanderings for a time, but now that it was over, he was free to explore the world from the comfort of a ship. A ship that could cut through the waves with the ease of a great whale and allowed Edwin to read warm and dry on the deck with the scent of the sea all about him.

Summary
The iron rebar ran through Edwin’s abdomen and embedded itself into the wall behind him with a sickening thud. The pain was all-encompassing and Edwin knew that it would be enough to discorporate a lesser ghost. For Edwin it wasn’t nearly enough to do that, but it did hurt something horrible. An agonizing kind of burn that went all the way through him and reminded him of being torn in two—a comparison he could unfortunately make with confidence.

Summary
In life, Edwin had never allowed himself much time for relaxation. There was always something new to learn or something productive that could be done. If Edwin wasn’t sleeping, he was trying to accomplish something.
Charles, on the other hand, was a proud believer in the power of a break. It had been a source of tension early on in the agency’s history. Charles would attempt to get Edwin to relax and just exist for a while and Edwin would grow impatient and testy at Charles’ seeming inability to keep at a thing until it was done.

Summary
Charles Rowland was born with a scarred-over soulmark.
That wasn’t so remarkable in and of itself, although modern advancements in hygiene and medicine meant that it was more and more unusual by the time Charles was born in 1973. It was rare. It meant that Charles’ soulmate, the one person in the world most suited to him, had died before Charles had even left his mother’s womb.
It struck him as fitting, later, when he was sixteen and never going to get any older. At least he wasn’t leaving behind a soulmate. At least, there wasn’t someone out there waking up to a suddenly scarred over mark, a stranger mourning a Charles they’d never gotten to know.
