“Merlin, Remus, do you have to make everything this difficult?” James’s tone softened, but the frustration lingered. “I’ve put up with Sirius throwing tantrums every week since we were eleven, Peter sulking like a kicked puppy whenever he feels ignored, and Regulus Black during finals season.” He raised an eyebrow, leaning in closer. “You’re the only one stubborn enough to fight me all the way to the bitter end.”
At that, Remus’s lips twitched faintly, though he didn’t lift his head. “I’m not stubborn,” he muttered, his voice hoarse and barely audible over the quiet hum of the castle.

For a long time, Barty didn’t say anything. His hands clenched into fists, his shoulders hunched. Finally, he muttered, “I’ve just got so much shit is going on. But… Evan’s happy. He’s finally happy. Things with his parents are ok, and Pandora’s… she’s okay now. Dorcas has Marlene, she’s got the girls in that group. She’s happier than I’ve ever seen her. They don’t need me ruining that.”
“You’re not ruining anything. He’s your boyfriend. I’m sure he'd want to help. And Reg’s always telling me about Pandora, how she’s like a little sister to all of you. And Dorcas is constantly talking about you and your little group. Always defending you brightly when people shit talk y’all, even when it’s Sirius or Mary.” James said gently.
Barty shook his head. “You don’t get it. They’ve fought so hard to have something good, and I’m not going to ruin it by dragging them down with my crap. I love them both, I love Evie too much to do that.”
