A minute later, a second knock followed. This one was a little louder and firmer. It sounded purposeful. David paused his show and set his beer aside. Before he could move to get off of the bed, the person knocked a third time. This time was desperate, more akin to beating on a drum than knocking on a door. It had David hurrying to his feet, reaching for his BlackBerry on instinct. In another life, he might have been reaching for a knife on his belt instead.

Summary
Performing had always been Neil’s weakness. It went against every instinct that his mother had ingrained into him, an entire life spent learning how to disappear into a crowd. But the feeling of playing music — of not just playing, but performing, facing that wall of noise and energy and adrenaline in a good crowd and giving it right back — was something that Neil couldn’t resist.
