Summary
Usually, the nightmares came on and left in razor-sharp, lightning-quick flashes of panic and pain. The sick, sticky sensation of fear lingered for hours afterwards, but the content of their night terrors faded quickly upon waking and left them grasping at vague and poorly-defined shadows.
This was something else. The world stretched on in monochrome; craggy bluffs creeping into the soft lapping waters, coarse pale sand beneath them, washed-out sedge and beachgrass climbing tiny, gentle hills. This was the Beach.

Higgs set his camera down in the sedgegrass and shifted his elbows against the dirt. Sam disappeared into the Distro Center, leaning back against the pull of gravity on his precariously-stacked tower of precious cargo. Sam the Man. Pulling for the little people. Bringing everyone all together, like some big damn selfless hero. Was going to be a damn sight when Higgs blew it all up. All things in time, though.
Still, this was a hell of a lull. Dressed in castoff Bridges porter gear, he looked just like any other fresh-eyed hopeful come across to Lake Knot with the naive desire to make things better. Roam around in a new place. Free-range Porters!
He scoffed to himself. Idiots, all of them. He couldn’t blame them for it; they just didn’t get it.

MULEs didn’t often raid each others camps; honor among thieves, and all, and it was a fair fight when everyone had weapons, anyway— but they got desperate, sometimes. Even more desperate. Higgs also didn’t begrudge his men the sport of catch-and-release, as long as they did their jobs any other time.
Except.
He took a deep breath.
