Mydei knew this better than most. To his colleagues and to anyone else he came across daily, he was simply the solemn one. He never said anything more than what was asked of him and he never lingered long enough to befriend anyone else. No man was an island, but Mydei came close to being one.
But alone, in the solitary privacy of his own room every Thursday and Sunday night, he harbored one little secret that he would never deign to reveal to anyone else.

Their new co-worker glanced at his outstretched hand, hesitating for a beat. Then he took it and gave it a firm shake, professional in all his demeanor. “You can call me Mydei.”
“Mydei,” Phainon repeated, testing the way the name rolled against his tongue. He smiled again, brighter this time. “Well, Mydei. It’s nice to finally meet you like this.”
