From the moment Steve set eyes on Bucky at a London pub, it’s been inevitable.
But standing here, seconds away from tying his life to Bucky’s, Steve is acutely aware of the parts of his soul he has cordoned off from Bucky—the blood and the death and the damned lies.

“He did this?” he asks Sam, even though it’s unnecessary. “What happened? When did James come back, he was on a mission with Nat—”
“It’s not James,” Sam says.
That stops Steve in his tracks.
“What do you mean?”
“The man in there,” Tony picks up, still through the one-way Hulk-proof glass, “is James Buchanan Barnes. But he’s not our James Buchanan Barnes. Or, well, your James, Bucky, whatever, because trust me, Cap, I want no part of that murdery package, what with the parent-killing. I think we can all agree I already have too many daddy issues—”
“What he means to say,” Sam cuts in with a pained expression, “is that this isn’t James. Nat checked in a few minutes ago. The two of them are still in Bolivia, won’t be back for a week. We…didn’t share the details.”
Steve listens quietly, wishing a little desperately for ignorance even as Sam’s and Tony’s words paint a clear picture in his head.
“Where is he from?” is all he asks.
“Another universe,” Tony answers. “Guess the multiverse exists after all. Bruce is looking into it.”
