Summary
Nathaniel Allbright served his country when he was drafted and paid the price with an injury that retired him. When he grew uncomfortable with what his government was doing, he had good reason to remain silent and let others stand up against the martial crackdown going on across the country.
Two centuries into the future in a world bombed to hell where those reasons don't matter anymore, he'd hoped tribalism and prejudice would go the way of the Old World out of necessity for the survival of their remaining ragtag communities in the Commonwealth, but a then comes a run in with the Brotherhood that reminds him of the bigotry himself and his family faced before the bombs. It just helps to push him into facing his fears and to take the actions he'd once been too afraid to take.

Cooper Howard has found he enjoys working with Courier Six and her motley crew to take down the Fiends the NCR has put a bounty on in the ruins near New Vegas. But then the Legion puts a bounty out on Courier Six and while he had started to like the Courier, that amount of caps could go a long way in helping to prevent him from going feral.
A conversation between himself and the Courier on trust and betrayal reminds him of a similar one he had under the starry Alaskan skies in Anchorage while on watch with Nathaniel Allbright and it has him contemplating the type of man he once was and who he's become.
