Summary
As the days marched on from the wedding, things were always predictable. Alma could live with predictability; she would gladly trade chaos for boredom. It only wore on her some of the time. Still, she stuck it out because that was what marriage was all about.
When Ennis was gone the summer before they got married, Alma had been foolish enough to be hopeful. She thought that, maybe, since they would be separated for so long, he might be more excited to see her when he got back. Maybe absence really would make his heart grow fonder. Something had to eventually.

They’d already hugged goodbye. She was just about to reach the door to leave when she stopped herself. “Daddy.”
“Hm?”
She turned around. “Can I please ask you about something?”
He quietly sighed, bracing himself. “Go ahead.”
“What were those shirts hanging in the wardrobe?”
He closed his eyes and exhaled, having anticipated and dreaded the question. He remained silent as he sat back down on the bed.
“I know I did something that upset you. I just wanna know why, that’s all.”
“Honey, I can’t.”
“Yes, you can. You can tell me. It’s okay.”
After preparing himself a little longer, he finally opened his eyes, but still wouldn’t meet hers. “The plaid one’s mine. The blue one…”
She walked over and sat back down in the chair next to him, not wanting to rush him.
“You were just a kid, but I had a friend named Jack."

Strangely enough, Ennis would remember the year Jack died as the kindest.
For a brief moment in time, nothing had changed for Ennis. They were still meeting in November. No one was happy about it. It was supposed to be August. Their last meeting hadn’t ended very well, but they at least had their next to look forward to. The frustration and pain had a foreseeable end.
No one had told him yet that the meeting wasn’t coming.
