“I said,” Narumi’s voice lilts childishly, fluffy bangs obscuring his eyes, “spar with me.”
It’s almost comical, Soushirou thinks, how exhausted he had felt before this and yet how immediately he reacted to it — suddenly fueled by a burning fervor that rivals him on his best days. The corners of his mouth already ticking upward as he considers what to say; what response would draw this out the longest. Would buy him enough time to turn Narumi’s pretty little eyes and starlit gaze toward him for even a fraction of a second, whether they be ruby red in their most natural state or blooming pink out of frustration. Willing to push himself through however many additional hours of physical exertion this might demand of him for it.
More than, even.
Or; Hoshina and Narumi, drawn together like a moth to a flame.

“I’ll be a distant memory one day,” Narumi’s voice slurs with his intoxication, pitching unusually as he waved his cup of sake in the air — gesturing at nothing while he rambles.
“Is that so?” Soushirou hums noncommittally, laughing when the dual tone man glares at him as if his response to… whatever this is matters.
Narumi Gen is the captain of the First Division, the JAKDF’s strongest anti-kaiju combatant, the first and so far only user of Numbers Weapon One. He is not and will not be one forgotten by history, and, whenever he isn’t drunk out of his mind at a mandatory ball none of them want to be at, he seems to know that damn well. He practically never stops talking about how strong he is, and Soushirou has to say that he rather prefers the honest ego to this facsimile of humility. Here stands a monster dressed in flushed human skin, claiming that he, of all the faceless soldiers he leads and even more faceless civilians he protects, will leave no record behind. It’s utterly preposterous, and Soushirou nearly chips a molar with how hard he grinds his teeth.
Or; Hoshina and Narumi's first conversation was not when Narumi tried to recruit him, but long before that.

If you were to ask Gen when all of… this began, he honestly wouldn’t be able to tell you.
It might have been the day he and Soushirou officially met. It might have been during their first ever mission together. Or it might’ve been long before any of that, when they could only say they knew the other by the shape of their respective rumors — undesirable prodigy rookies for entirely different reasons. All he knows is, at some point, they lost themselves; entranced by the vision of the other in motion and drawn ever further in by each additional idiosyncrasy revealed, until they were wrapped up in a red string of fate drawn in blood. A trail of bodies left in their wake, each foolish soul judged under some inscrutable criteria that only makes sense to the two of them.
It’s probably unhealthy.
Definitely dangerous.
But with his lover’s hands by either side of his head, pinning him to the futon below, he can’t say he finds it in himself to care much at all.
Or; Hoshina is a killer, and Narumi his willing enabler.

For Narumi, loving Hoshina was less like a thing he did and more like a thing that happened to him.
He'd hated the swordsman from the moment they met; first because he looked far too much like his older brother, then second because he'd refused his invitation to the First Division. It was a petty, meandering sort of dislike — irrational, instinctive distaste more than anything definitive, and when, exactly, it transformed into something approaching affection would be impossible to say. It was like he woke up one day and just knew, the same way he knew grass was still green and the sky was still blue even after the world went gray.
It wasn't an argument to be had, it was (is) a fact of the world.
Narumi Gen was in love with Hoshina Soushirou, and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it.
Or; Hoshina and Narumi yearn on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Even for an alpha, Hoshina has always had a stronger sense of smell than most.
It was practically debilitating for him as an unpresented pup, with the halls of the Hoshina estate leaving him keeled over nauseous more often than not and, frankly, it didn't get much better as he aged. Experience and unfettered access to military grade suppressants were the only reasons that he could say he maintained control as well as he did, and even then he found himself wrinkling his nose. To put it this way; Hoshina kept a tight handle on all of the ugly, violent impulses that reared their head at him when he was around another scent for longer than he liked, but he wouldn't be around it at all if he had a choice in the matter.
To put it another way; Narumi fucking Gen should not have a scent that makes Hoshina want to lure him into his den and keep him there, content and claimed, until further notice.
Or; Hoshina might have a problem, and that problem is sakura soda scented.
