Overall, it had been only a few months since Izuku’s diagnosis, and things had been good. The six-year-old was making friends at school, something that had relieved Shouta to no end. He had been afraid his child was taking after him, what with how lonely Izuku always seemed to be, extroverted in ways but introverted where it mattered. But then Izuku had come home one day with a black eye and a missing tooth, looking the happiest he’d ever been. Shouta had nearly had a coronary, but- with the look on Izuku’s face when he told his Dad how he’d helped someone, he’d made a friend, he’d been a Hero- Shouta couldn’t be too angry.
So, yes, things had been going well. Which was why Shouta was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Summary
The child was small. Smaller than he should have been, the social worker told Shouta. He was malnourished, tiny ribs sticking out against skin that held far too much of a pallor for a two-year-old. The toddler’s eyes were wide, emerald green, and distrustful. His hair was far too long and would’ve been curly like Shouta’s had it not been matted.
“His name is Izuku,” the social worker said. “Would you like to say ‘hi’, Izuku?”

"Ma, Mom, I need to… I need to tell you guys something.” Taking in a shuddering breath, Shouta ignored his mothers’ concerned expressions, powering through and opening his mouth to say-
“Merry Christmas, guys!” Hizashi’s voice cheered from behind him.
Shouta saw the very moment that his mothers clocked Izuku, their expressions identical: dropped jaws, wide eyes, confused tilts of the head as they stared. They stayed like that for several long, heart-wrenching moments. Shouta felt sweat begin to drip down the back of his neck, his hands clammy, but even when he opened his mouth, he couldn’t find the words to say.
