PREQUEL TO "I DRANK DRY THE RIVER LETHE"
-
Jackson welcomed you as a refugee, taking you under their wing like you had been family since birth. They didn’t know who you were, nor the terrible atrocities you’d committed with your previous faction. All they knew was that a scrawny teenager stood at their gates, emaciated and battered… and that didn’t scare them. Not as much as it should have.Still, your young self was grateful that the ‘Jacksonians’ saw you as useful. Especially to your now best friend, Christine. Okay, maybe to her you were useful in the “listens to my endless gossip” kind of way, but still useful.
Between drinking on Fridays with Christine, and your steady work in the garden, it was impossible to get side-tracked. Not with friends or drama or love. Especially not love. You weren’t made for that kind of thing.
Right?

“And the first time that you kissed me
I drank dry the River Lethe
The Liffey would have been softer on my stomach all the same
But you spoke some quick new music
That went so far to soothe this soul
As it was and ever shall be
Unearth without a name.”- Hozier, First Time

Summary
Ellie left. You stayed. Then you left, too.
You told yourself it wasn’t to follow her, but the roads you took said otherwise. You weren’t sure what you were looking for—absolution, closure, a reason to stop grieving someone who was still alive—but you knew you wouldn’t find it in the empty farmhouse she left behind. So you walked. And walked.
And somehow, that led you to Abby Anderson.
