So Rumi brought up her sword and lined it steady against her chest. There was no dramatic flash, no scream. Her aim was true — the sword pierced clean through her heart — and her body folded gently, landing on the floor with a soft thump.
Then it was still, and the night continued.
Quiet. Beautiful.
The stars overhead twinkled, and inside, two girls still sat asleep against each other on the couch, thinking they had more time.

“What?” Mira slurred, voice rough. “You gonna yell at me or somethin’?”
Zoey was so done. “Fuck you,” Her hands shook as she shoved the empty bottle into Mira’s hand, pushing at her chest weakly. “You promised Mira, you promised.”
Mira scoffed, pushing past her to stumble toward the couch. “Yeah, well—promises don’t mean much anymore, do they, princess?”
Zoey’s heart dropped, and she tried to keep her voice from cracking. “What…what is that supposed to mean?”
OR
Rumi’s dead.
She’s dead and she’s not coming back.
Mira and Zoey don’t know what to do anymore.
