A year ago, she doesn’t doubt that the crib (if not the entire ship) would have been turned into kindling by the angry, pain-filled child who hated any mere mention of Gold Roger. But Ace has come a long way, since then. Since he started calling Luffy and Sabo his brothers, and opening up his heart. Since he willingly set foot on the Oro Jackson, and started calling her ‘home’.
Makino is still smiling, pleased and proud, all the way to Party’s Bar, up the front steps and in through the door.
And there, her world cracks in half.

Rouge made friends with the wee folk more by accident than anything, really. On both their parts; hers, by forgetting to put up a bottle of home-brewed honeywine after a night of imbibing alone, and then theirs, by not stealing said bottle outright before drinking themselves into a stupor. It was quite a surprise, stepping out onto her back porch the next morning to find twenty-odd tiny people laying in various disheveled heaps on the table and railings and flower pots. For the first few moments, Rouge honestly assumed she must’ve still been drunk out of her mind.
Then one of the very smallest individuals sat up, a tiny woven straw hat falling off his head of bright red hair, and shouted a very high-pitched “SHIT!”

Sabo leads the way, head on a constant swivel to watch their surroundings as they head up the beach and onto a proper path. Luffy stays right next to Makino’s side, both for her sake and his. Ace brings up the rear. He’s got his shitty old man’s stupid sword slung over his back; better for intimidation, if anyone gives them trouble, not to mention it just- helps. It helps. The dumb thing’s practically got a mind of its own, like Oro, just a lot smaller, and it feels just as pissed off at the guy who flung them aside a week ago like they were bugs.
(“I’m gonna get stronger,” Ace told the sword the first night he and his brothers spent aboard Oro at sea, chasing after the ship that took Makino. “And you’re gonna help me, and no one is going to hurt our family again.” The blade turned hot where it sat across his palms, but it didn’t burn, and Ace would have sworn he saw a flicker of a wide, fierce smile reflected in the steel.)

Foolish. Foolish, stupid, short-sighted - thinking a kid who’d grown up at sea would be appropriately wary of storms, would know how to take shelter and stay put. Assuming that Franky would give Aqua Laguna the same respect as those who’d grown up in Water 7. Not that Tom counted among their number either, of course, being a native of Fishman Island; but it only took one experience with the fearsome annual storm to hammer home the seriousness of her strength.
One time out in the howling wind and powerful waves for a fishman meant some bruises the next day, where he’d gotten slammed against underwater buildings a few times.
One time out in the storm for a tiny, scrawny, slip of a human child would mean certain death.

“We need a doctor,” the first kid says as soon as he leaps ashore.
Pipsqueak can’t be any older than Nojiko; he’s small and slight, physically clean but with a sort of rough edge that Bellemere remembers all too well from her hoodlum days. Brat is keeping his hands clenched and down by his sides, but there’s a cutlass almost as tall as he attached to a wide leather belt slung across his chest, the sort of thing that could cause all sorts of damage even in the hands of someone who can’t properly wield it.
The boy and girl flanking him have their own swords, and look a little more serious with them. But Bell focuses on the first kid, the way he’s identified Genzo as the person to talk to at the front of their small crowd, the posture that practically screams he’ll get what he wants one way or another.
The way his hands, even clenched, are trembling.
