A week passes and Phainon still doesn’t know what possessed her to say that. If we had a baby. And she certainly doesn’t bring it up again. Because what would she even say?
“Hey, Mydei, I thought about getting you pregnant while I was masturbating and I came so hard I think I blacked out.”
“Hey, Mydei, do you ever think about how good of a mom you’d be? Because I do.”
“Hey, Mydei, do you think we could rebuild Aedes Elysiae so our kids can see where I grew up?”
She has to press her hands to her eyes to stop from crying. This is too much, she’s taken this too far. And yet, she can’t help it. Her daydreams are now filled with visions of small children that look just like Mydei – but maybe with her own smile, or eyes – running through the wheat fields of her hometown.

In the middle of rebuilding after the war, a woman asks Mydei if she is holding Phainon’s baby. Now the two of them can’t stop thinking about it.

Phainon sighs. She sounds awestruck, almost disbelieving.
“I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing that,” she says, hiding a little giggle with a kiss to Mydei’s sternum. “I get to be your wife a full three weeks before I thought I would.”
Mydei’s chest seizes and she feels herself flush. She’d expected Phianon’s giddy acceptance of their Kremnoan marriage to be calming, comforting, but instead the words are entirely too much to handle. For her to be so excited about her status as wife makes Mydei go light headed; she feels like her heart is swelling, growing too big for her ribs and crowding out her lungs. Phainon is her wife. They’re really married.

As Phainon frets over how to recreate an Elysian wedding, it comes time for Mydei to finally admit that in the eyes of Kremnoan tradition, the two of them have already been married for several years. After the initial shock wears off, Phainon decides there is only one way to make it up to her wife that they never got a true wedding night.
