Simon wasn’t used to affection.
The last person who had given him anything of the kind was his mother, 20 years ago.
Cults aren’t very affectionate and prisons certainly are not.
For more than half of his life, Simon had known nothing but pain. Any hand reaching out was never gentle or soft, but always inflicted pain.
His own hands weren’t much better. They’d been used for…horrible things.
Survival things.
So when Ryland Grace first placed his hand over Simon’s right and only hand, he didn’t think his reaction was wrong.---------------------------------------------

“Oh, that’s grass.”
Grass.
Growing up on Mars and then the space station, Eden, Simon had only ever seen drawings of grass. According to the Old Records, grass was long strands of green plant that grew in thousands from the dirt. You could cut it and keep it short, or you could let it grow long and wild.
It sounded a lot like hair to Simon, and he could never fully picture it.
