Summary
No one had ever told him he was capable of anything great before. For a long time, Bob had seen himself as someone ordinary and useless. Someone cowardly who flinched at his father's shouting and hid in the attic, hoping to go unnoticed. He'd lived so long among the attic mice that he'd started to feel like one himself. He looked at Yelena; the light from the moving train's window filled her with a glow Bob had never seen before.
She was like a small light, someone capable of illuminating everything.
"I am a wizard," Bob said again, this time with more strength and conviction.
"Exactly," she smiled at him, filling him with a confidence he'd never felt before.

"That's cruel," Bob said, wincing in mock suffering.
"Cruel?" Yelena let out a crystalline laugh.
"Yeah. It's like asking someone to pick their favorite star in the sky."

He looks up at her, watching her stand by his mother's peony garden across the street. He holds his breath as his eyes fill with her. She smiles widely, jumping barefoot through the overgrown grass of her front yard, treading on the lawn and dirtying the soles of her feet. Her long, messy blonde ponytail sways to the rhythm of a song only she can hear, while beaded sweat rolls down her forehead, tracing a path down her neck and shoulders. The sprinklers turn on and an artificial rain wraps around her, pulling laughter out of her, her Pink Floyd t-shirt clinging to her skin, outlining the curve of her chest and hips. Embarrassed, he looks away, but he can still see her, because she's a vision, free and wild like no one else. She's like a breath of fresh air that eases the scorching August heat.

"Lena's cute," Bob says, not realizing what he's said until it's already out there, because suddenly Yelena's staring at him like he just said something completely ridiculous, and now there's nothing left for him to do but be embarrassed.
"You… you can call me that too, if you want," she tells him, putting on her sunglasses to look cooler than she feels, even though inside she's as flustered and anxious as a fifteen-year-old. Damn it, she was a grown woman. A cute guy telling her that her childhood nickname is cute shouldn't rattle her this much.
"Really?"
"Sure, I mean, whatever, only if you want to," she says, trying to sound indifferent, doing her best impression of the cool girls from TV shows.
"Okay," Bob says, curls bouncing like little crazy streamers. For a second, Yelena wants to reach out and touch them, see if they're as soft as they look.
"Can I do it too?" John asks, ruining the moment. As always.
"Go to hell," Yelena replies, giving the front seat another kick.

It's strange — usually his squeaky carrot always cheers him up. Normie can chew and squeeze it for hours without getting bored of it. He tries something else — Mr. Banana doesn't work either. He tries Eddie the teddy bear, but nothing changes. Normie starts to think none of his toys can help. His dad's eyes stay sad, even as he smiles kindly. "We'll play another day, okay?" he says softly, and Normie barks, trying to climb up toward him. His dad picks him up carefully and sets him on his lap, and Normie licks the little drops falling from his eyes. They're warm and salty, falling steadily, without stopping. Normie doesn't understand — he couldn't possibly. He just tries to be a good boy so his dad will be happy. He nuzzles his damp little nose against his cheek, and his dad hugs him tight, his whole body shaking, the salty drops still falling.
Even so, Normie will keep loving him.

The woman's voice on the other end was slightly deep, with a distinctive accent.

"Really? I'd say you're the dumbest thief who ever tried to rob me. So, guess what? You left your stuff with me, smart guy. I don't know who taught you how to steal, but you had a terrible teacher."
"Wait, seriously, this is all a mistake! I… I didn't take your things on purpose. I just—I just mixed it up with my own backpack. Come on! You have to admit they're practically identical."
There's a brief pause, and Bob feels like he could bite his nails off from the unnecessary suspense. Oh, please, why does everyone automatically assume he's a thief?
