Summary
Executive Chef James Flint can’t quite place the feeling of familiarity he experiences when John Silver, the worst cook he’s ever met, weasels his way onto the kitchen staff at The Walrus & The Carpenter. South Beach Miami has always been a melting pot ready to boil over, but with the pipes literally rotting beneath their feet, past horrors creeping in again, and new ones encroaching on the horizon, Flint finds himself forced to confront his own demons as he and a staff of immigrants face down an authoritarian regime threatening to tear their community apart. For ten years, he and general manager Eleanor Guthrie have overcome every challenge, but Silver also has a past that could send Flint’s entire existence into a tailspin.
*I’ve updated this summary to better reflect the reality of what this story has become. It’s no longer a fluffy comedy. While it’s still going to have comedy in the mix, I want to be honest about the heavy themes that have developed here. Because this started as a rant about my real life work woes, it began without a plot. Now that I know where it’s going, I feel the previous summary was a bit disingenuous.

Summary
James McGraw was in love with two remarkable people until his life was ripped away. Stripped of his naval rank and thrown into prison at the Earl of Ashbourne's orders, he faces conditions he never thought existed...and he must find a way to survive.
The harsh and unforgiving backstory for James McGraw in Freedom, Illuminated.
Mind the warnings. This is dark. There is torture, rape, and heavy angst. This is not the most graphic story on this site, but it is not for the faint of heart.

Summary
James faces the window, staring out at the darkness of the gardens as though he is thousand miles away. Thomas might have thought his approach went almost unnoticed, except that the absolute stillness with which James holds himself could only come from someone who was very intentionally not moving. It almost seems as if he’s afraid to; as though the slightest tremor in the fragile fabric of what the two of them have shared that evening would tear the entire thing apart.
Thomas knows the feeling. He shares it, intimately. But he has come too far to turn back now - and he knows he will regret it forever if he lets his courage fail him in this moment. He reaches out very slowly and caresses the tips of James’ fingers with his own.
“Will you stay?”
OR: yes we obviously need another fic about what happens post-kiss/Alfred Hamilton getting smacked down. So have like, 6 chapters of smut and feelings.

Summary
When James follows the Admiral into his study, when Hennessey turns back to him and steps aside to reveal Alfred Hamilton sitting in the room’s best chair, eyes narrowed like an old eagle’s, when the grinding clockwork of the world as James thought he knew it seems to shudder to a halt around him –
James can think, for a moment, of nothing but the last time he saw the earl of Ashbourne, and what happened after. How very carefully Thomas had approached him. The warmth of his hands.
(Or: Alfred Hamilton offers James McGraw a deal in exchange for Thomas and Miranda's safety. Then they have to live with it.)

Summary
It is almost noon. When had it become noon? For how long has she been here, on the floor in her bedroom, surrounded by the careful, gentle words of her son? Her son, who was so hopeful, filled with his bright thoughts and bright ideals and bright futures that sometimes only he could see? How they had all marvelled at him! How she had marvelled at him! How she had looked at him and thought - oh, he is miraculous, truly!
For how long has her son been dead?

But the past rarely does.
As the Arizona Territory's borders shift from Union to Confederate control and back again, as war sweeps the nation, as the West begins to succumb to the inexorable pull of progress, civilization and change, two grieving people find a flicker of hope, and the possibility of reunion with the love they thought they'd lost forever.
