George was at the Venus and Mars launch party for one reason only—and it wasn’t Paul. Even the scarf around his neck couldn't tether him when Bob pulled him under.

Instead, it marked what was theirs, combustible in its fragility. Threads of heat and quiet obsession lingered long after the music faded, memory pressing against skin, and the ache of it settled deep where desire and shame collided.

    Summary

There was some rustling down the line, like John had the paper right there. “Here, ‘Bob Dylan Visits Childhood Home of George Harrison.’”

George nearly spat out his tea. “You’re joking.”

He tried to picture it—Bob standing in the doorway of his childhood terraced home in Speke. In a house that was too small to hold someone like him, with its cracking floral wallpaper and cramped porch. It stirred something unnameable in his chest—something unfamiliar, warm and blooming under his skin.

    --

George didn’t know why Bob was in Liverpool—or why he’d gone to his childhood home. He didn’t know why no one else seemed to care.

And yet, he bought the paper. Booked a train. Went looking anyway.

He didn’t know what he was hoping to find. He almost gave up.

But Bob had a way of appearing at the last minute—and suddenly, George was slipping sideways into something he hadn’t even known he wanted.

Bob’s eyeliner was smudged beneath those wide eyes; his cheeks dimpled with his smile. In the darkness of the room, his eyes glinted with something bright enough to light it.

“What are you doing here, man?” Bob yelled over the music.

George shrugged, fingers slowing on the strings. He grinned back, all toothy, all trouble. “You know,” he replied. No elaboration. Bob didn’t need it.

    --

The Rolling Thunder Revue, 1975. George didn’t know why he was there—only that when things started to slip, this was where he ended up. The air was thick with smoke, sound, and something unsaid.

Bob was singing somewhere, and that was the problem. He told himself he didn’t come for Bob.

But they’d always been good at finding each other in the dark.

A time lapse occurs where the late 1920s overlap with the mid 1960s, and we have two icons in their youth: J. Robert Oppenheimer the theoretical physicist and associate professor at Caltech Pasadena & University of California, Berkeley, and the renowned singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Just wait and watch what happens if they ended up meeting (and living with) each other.

Bob forgets about everyone and everything else around him as he sits down and brings the phone to his ear, “Hey, Johnny. How are you doin’?” He continues to smoke his cigarette with his free hand.

Johnny’s voice, smooth as Tennessee whiskey enters Bob’s ears and the folk singer can’t help grinning like an idiot.

It could be said that Bob's breaks at home would stress him out, and being on tour would keep him calm and focused. When he was home, away from his metal workshop and his whiskey, he might feel restless if he didn't have his stress toy nearby. And that toy was me.

(A quick idea, passed even more quickly to a space here.No reference year, deliberately. I'm clear about the time in his life when it takes place, but I'm amused that every reader who stops here (three or four readers, at most) imagines Bob at whatever age they prefer.English is not my native language. If you have something to say, say it politely.)

    Summary

The thin gold hoops swayed lazily in his ears, catching light like they remembered every sun Bob had ever seen him under. And every sun he hadn’t.

He’d seen them before—in the papers, during Dark Horse. Never looked this closely, though. They made George look otherworldly without even trying.

    --

Friar Park, 1980. Bob was touring in England soon, and he hadn’t seen George in ages. Divorced and drifting, he seemed to notice things about George that he hadn’t done before. Quiet domesticity. A kind of peace that Bob couldn’t even name, let alone touch.

And—those earrings. It became a private obsession, the glint of metal against skin.

All it took was a suggestion blurted too carelessly, and suddenly the space between them felt thinner than it had ever been.

George tilted his head with an ease that belied his seriousness. “Don’t expect any Beatles songs. Can you imagine Bob Dylan singing ‘Penny Lane’?”

He let the question hang, lips curling into a smile. The air shifted, as if the moment itself was being dangled off the side of a cliff.

“Not that I’d mind hearing him do ‘Something’.”

    --

1989. The Traveling Wilburys were on the road—a one-of-a-kind tour.

On stage, George could hardly tear his eyes from Bob. Off stage, Bob's hands seemed to find him without thought, as if pulled by a gravity neither had learned to resist.

But subtlety had never been their strong suit—and the others weren’t as oblivious as they pretended to be.

“I used to live here, once.” Bob had said, walking arm against arm with George as they turned onto 23rd. His cap was pulled low, his hands stuffed into his pockets, his shades on. It somehow made him look more like holy-fuck-that’s-Bob-Dylan than less. George didn’t remember what he said in response, maybe ‘nice place’ or a noncommittal noise but he was sure that it wasn’t his idea to cross in the middle of the road, walk up and check in to the Chelsea.

    “Wanna see?” Bob had asked.

“See what? The old pad?” George had asked, cheekily, oddly nervous.

    “You’ll see.”

George is not allowed to relax because he is in charge of a man child who happens to be the voice of a generation, the best musician in the world, George's favorite artist. He can't fucking relax when Bob Fucking Dylan is hungover and probably still intoxicated in a bathtub, staring at him with the bluest eyes George has ever seen. And George probably looks like a fool, because he shouldn't be here. This shouldn't be happening. He shouldn't be blushing so hard, and Bob shouldn't be looking at him like that.

George would be lying if he said he wasn’t stoned. Scratch that, George would be lying if he said he wasn’t completely baked, and, to be fair, kinda horny. He never knew what to do at that moment, I mean, Bob was there, so it’s not like he could just whip it out and get it over with, but he couldn’t stand being untouched.
