Don’t say anything about missing Eddie, he thinks as he chops veggies to hide in Bobby’s ragu sauce. Don’t say anything about wanting him and Christopher back. Don’t say anything about El Paso, or facetime calls, or any feelings.

In 2025, Evan Buckley is living at 4335 South Bedford Street and missing his Diaz boys. To compensate, he starts cooking.
In 2017, new firefighter academy recruit Eddie Diaz is starting to believe his son when he says that their new house comes with its very own kitchen ghost.

Summary
It’s been two months, and Tommy’s been at the loft a lot; his own place feels sort of cold, in comparison, these days, and the dark timber and exposed brick and the low-hanging lights all make the open plan feel so cosy, so homely, that he hardly wants to leave. And the space is flooded with memories, too; the photo on Evan’s dresser with the entire 118, and the drawing Christopher did of their family tree when he was nine, and the weird ferris wheel sculpture that he apparently scavenged thrift stores for after the lightning strike. There’s a weight of life in the apartment that has never held space anywhere that Tommy’s lived in before, and he wants to spend years basking in it. Or the one where Tommy goes over to see Evan, and sometimes a night in is better than one out.

Summary
Buck shuffled around at an unrelenting pace, cleaning the house from top to bottom. He wanted it perfect and welcoming for Chris’s return...
He should have known Buck would do something like this, he cared so much more about Eddie and his son than anyone had. Not expecting something in return but always deserving of it....
Buck has been an angel in Eddie's life, always being a positive presence, and clearly caring about him so much. When Chris decides he's ready to come home and Eddie goes to get him, Buck gets the house ready for the two of them. This gesture makes Eddie thoroughly confused about his feelings for Buck, and he can't get it off his mind.

Summary
“Buck, I’m gonna need a lot more words here, buddy. Tie what for who?”
Buck sighs again, even louder and longer and noisier this time. “Eddie’s shoes,” he clarifies, through gritted teeth. “I—I usually tie them. For him.”
More silence, this time somehow more deafening. Buck inspects a stray line of grout until he can’t bear it anymore, then looks up for judgment.
Chim’s eyebrows are sky-high. “You’ve been tying Eddie’s shoes?” he repeats, strangled and high-pitched. “Regularly?”
—
or: buck, eddie, and the intimacy of a properly-tied shoe.

Summary
As soon as Eddie is passed out on the couch, Buck surveys the damage in the bedroom. Standing amongst the broken glass, overturned treadmill and chunks of plaster, he pulls his phone out of his back pocket and dials a familiar number.
“Buck?” It’s late so Buck’s not surprised by the sleepy voice of his captain. He listens to the sound of bed covers shifting and the soft pad of footsteps before Bobby speaks again, this time a little louder. “Everything okay?”
“No,” Buck’s eyes land on Eddie’s silver star box, lying on its side on the floor, medal nowhere to be found. “It’s really not.”
****
An alternate version of Eddie's breakdown and how Buck helps him through it, featuring a few familiar faces, a promise and something new at the end of it. -

Summary
“It’s not about the actual orange, though,” Ravi tells him. “It’s about the gesture. You know, would your partner go out of their way to do something simple just to make your life easier?”
Eddie thinks on it for a second. “But isn’t that just what a relationship is? If you like someone, you take care of them. There shouldn’t need to be a theory about that, it should be pretty obvious.”
Or
Eddie finds out about the Orange Peel Theory and it leads to some important realizations.

Summary
He loves Buck in that life-altering, breath-stealing, ground-shaking kind of way.
And most of the time he’s able to stuff it down. He keeps it tucked beneath his rib cage, right next to his heart - where it’s close enough to always feel and safe enough that it can’t ever ruin what they already have. But on days like these, where Buck feels so much like his that Eddie feels dizzy with it, well. It becomes a little harder to hold all of it inside.
