Scott Goldsmith was an insufferable prick, only coming to the cafe when Avid was working, and only ever ordering one of the most expensive drinks on the menu. Iced latte, almond milk, creamer. And it wasn’t like Avid had chosen to memorize it, needing to make the stupid drink every day he worked had drilled it into his head.
“I assume your usual order.” Avid noted, tone stiff, not the professional kind, but in the manner that displayed audibly how much he disliked the other man.
“That would be lovely.” Scott replied in that smooth accent.
He never did catch onto the disdain in Avid’s voice, if he did, he didn’t care.

A stake in his best friend’s heart, a town, a hauntingly beautiful man, screaming in desperation before a stake was driven into his own heart. The screams—his screams—rang in his ears well after he awoke. He clenched his eyes shut, he was fine.
“Certainties and uncertainties.” He mumbled, holding a hand over his heart, his heart that was beating, why wouldn’t it be, “Certainties, I’m alive. Uncertainties… Why I keep having that nightmare.”
He’d be fine, there was no reason he shouldn’t be. He was alive, he was fine. Elle was in the next room over, she was alive, they were both alive.

Unbeknownst to him and the girls, Avid isn't dead. Avid has been in a deep sleep all this time and he's finally woken up.

Perhaps it was his upbringing among the staff of the Thornvale Manor, or perhaps it was his somewhat asocial personality, but Abolish had always been far more of a listener and observer than a speaker. He picked up on things no one else did. By his early teenage years, he had learnt Morcant’s tells in poker, and was nicknamed a ‘bloodhound’ for his ability to tell a good new hire from a poor one.

Even after becoming a vampire, he was still the same screw-up, the same disappointment. They had never believed in him, never seen his potential. He was nothing to them but a liability, a loose cannon, a pathetic mess of impulsiveness and naivete.
Owen and Pyro, in particular, had made their disdain abundantly clear. He wasn't fit to be a vampire, they had sneered. And yet, it was the same Owen who had also whispered that he had the makings of a monster.
A monster.
Avid reveled in the label, embraced it. He was a monster now, and he finally possessed the power to be worse to those who had wronged him, to make them pay for their indifference and scorn.

“It’s fine.” Her voice was subdued. Near-death experiences did that to a person, and she’d been… really lucky, that she’d gotten away from him without being bitten, and drained or… turned. Into another vampire, because Avid had been… he’d been right, about everything. She hesitated, before, “Not going to say you told me so?” She tried for something light-hearted, but it fell flat, guilt and lingering fear marring the words.
