That soon changed when Sasha started to receive death threats. In a fit of panic, she reached out to the one person who she trusted to help her.

“I know the difference between someone wanting to pretend I’m innocent or pitying me because I grew up running grifts and believing in me,” she said. “I can tell when someone wants to hold me and let me close and when he’s just flattered I’m talking to him. You only want what’s real, and most of what we had was. The lies were only lies so you didn’t miss out on getting your badge back. I was protecting both of our goals.”
She preferred to think of her plans less as lies than the script of the industry, which was an art and a science as well as a lifestyle. The mansion made it seem like she didn’t need to steal, which saved her having to openly scam people in the lowly payment upon service schemes. When she was assumed to be easily able to afford things, her credit was barely questioned. She spent generously because it implied financial constraint was foreign to her. She dressed well, and looked like money. She was good for it. Ellis no longer believed she had anything in her moral wallet.
