“Wait!” Violet yelled out, on the edge of the dream’s conscious plane, pleading, “I know that was your dream!” her voice echoed in the dark room, painful reverberations bouncing about in her head. And all that remained was empty silence. She’d gone from his dream to hers, and wherever the in-between was, this was the void that now separated them.
Xaden was icing her out. He didn’t want her to find him, not even in his dreams.
And so, she decided, I’ll just have to follow the cold and find you.
Because when had Violet ever followed a single rule Xaden had asked her to follow?

At one point, while she hovered between the world of dreams and reality, she became aware of a small weight resting on the middle of her chest.
She sighed and the weight shifted, slid.
Deeply ingrained instinct drove one hand up to secure the weight to her chest. Her hand landed on something warm and incredibly soft.
“‘S nice,” she slurred, even as the waves of sleep started to pull her back under.
There was a chuckle to her left followed by a soft masculine murmur. Then the small weight was lifted away.
Her chest felt cold. She wanted the weight back, whatever it was. -

This story picks up a few months after the end of Onyx Storm. Violet and her allies are losing badly to the dark wielders, friends and loved ones already dead, their defenses crumbling. Xaden is gone, consumed by venin power, and despite months of searching, Violet cannot find him or any cure.
Then Andarna returns from her time with the Irids, more mature and aware of her abilities. She re-bonds with Violet. She reveals that Irids have a unique connection to magic, making what they channel flexible, able to be shaped to nearly anything. Together, Andarna, Tairn, and Violet decide their only hope is to bend time itself.
Their plan: send Violet, Xaden, Andarna, Tairn, and Sgaeyl back to the months before the apostasy. Aaric (Cam Tauri) and his dragon Molvic, gifted with foresight, confirm that this path offers a chance at victory with one catch: Duke Fen Riorson must be convinced to organize a rebellion in secret, working from the shadows to avoid Melgren’s battle forsight, rather than declaring open secession and plunging Tyrrendor into war against Navarre. Any course that puts Tyrrendor on a path to direct military conflict with Navarre cannot win.
