“I’m sorry I couldn’t save him,” Mas tells her one night, when they’ve both slipped onto the fire escape for some fresh air.
Keiko furrows her brow as she turns to him, the city lights gently reflecting off her skin.
“You can’t actually think it’s your fault,” she says, and it takes Mas by surprise. “I know you think you’re supposed to be, like, G.I. Joe or Superman or whatever, but there’s no way you really think it’s your fault that he’s gone.”

“Mas?” A gentle voice comes from behind him and he whips around, his consciousness rocketing back into his body.
Shig stands before him with messy hair and sleepy eyes, a look of worry on his face that immediately plants a nauseous feeling in the pit of Mas’ stomach.
“Are you okay?” Shig asks softly. Mas opens his mouth to answer and abruptly dissolves into tears.

"Woah, hey, Minnow. Miss me?” Mas staggers back, voice slightly breathless, and crushes him in one of those tight-tight hugs Minnow hasn’t received in over a year.
Minnow can’t speak. He’s crying, he realizes, and he’s gotten tall enough to bury his face in his brother’s shoulder. Mas smells like dirt, and sweat, and underneath everything that familiar earthy scent that belongs only to him.
“You’re here,” he finally manages, voice muffled by Mas’s army jacket. “You’re here.”

“Thanks, Ike,” Frankie says, stretching his leg out and bringing a hand to his upper calf in an attempt to massage away the pain of the allegedly healed gunshot wound just below his knee.
“You know, the bullet’s still in there,” he tells her, and Aiko’s eyes go wide.
“Woah, really?” she asks.
Frankie smiles at her reaction. He’s glad to see Tule Lake hasn’t dulled the stars in her eyes, the childlike wonder she’s never hesitated to express.
