“I don’t understand it,” said Herbert, irritation morphing into frustration—frustration’s clipped syllables were distinct from irritation’s. Herbert hated not understanding things. He’d either obsess over what mystified him (the results of an experiment that just didn’t make any sense) or declare it not worth understanding (women). Dan had assumed that love was firmly in the latter category, but maybe it troubled Herbert more than he’d thought.

I come down but I never go back up; what am I?The shift in the weather causes swelling of soft tissue and expanding of joint fluids that causes old injuries to ache. Ed knows this from his extensive education. Oswald knows this from experience. Ed's extensive education also means he knows how to soothe it and Oswald demands to know why Ed would bother with comforting him.
