Summary
After a nearly-unendurable wedding to the vampire lord Strahd von Zarovich and an equally excruciating winter alone in the castle, Adelaide Richter has at last established a small measure of stability for herself in Castle Ravenloft. Strahd is not a man to accept change easily, however, and so Adelaide must now immediately go to work strengthening what alliances she has and reckoning with her lurking enemies so that she can establish her authority and place in the cursed land of Barovia.
But what will prove more disruptive to the fragile peace that Adelaide has made for herself: the sudden appearance of an ancient foe of Barovia, hell-bent on revenge? Or the exhausting, frustrating, unyielding stubbornness of her husband, who refuses to release his dead man's grip on the past? (A dramatic retelling of the tail end of a Civ V game I really let myself indulge in! I was surprised by a few choices the bot players made, and felt it fitting to honor that surprise with some narrative juice.)

Or: Pirates of the Caribbean, entwined with the Temeraire universe. (Knowledge of Temeraire is useful but not necessary!) Here there be pirates, ships, and most importantly, dragons.

In the shadowed land of Barovia, fate is a cage forged by gods. For centuries, the Dark Powers have written the story of Strahd von Zarovich, a tale of unrequited love and eternal damnation. Its ending is carved in stone: the monster must be destroyed. Or so we thought.
This novel was written following a 2 year Curse of Strahd campaign where my character, Melantha Darkmourn, fell in love with the man who would would become the vampire Strahd. It is a profound declaration, that the moment Strahd's love became requited, the entire equation changed. He was no longer a man defined by bitterness and loss, but a man defined by hope, because she was his hope.
Melantha's journey is not just an attempt to save a man, it is a war against destiny itself. Every scene is infused with this new purpose. Her warnings are not just cautions, but desperate attempts to stop the cascade of events that leads to the monster she once knew.
This is a story about a player who loved her character so much that she tore apart the ending to give her the happily ever after she deserved. It is a testament to the idea that love is a force powerful enough to save a soul and defy the will of the gods (even if that God is your DM!)
