Summary
She thinks it’s a joke at first when she finds out that Joel’s a patroller, too. She’s a veteran, so it was a simple thing for her to be assigned to the work as well, but the idea of gentle, loving Joel with a gun in hand, fighting and killing, is almost laughably absurd.
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who spends hours on the porch with his daughter patiently teaching her guitar and think “yes, he’s good in a fight.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who regularly scoops up his fussy nephew and soothes him with an experienced parent’s deftness and think “yes, he’ll absolutely kill without hesitation.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who lets his teenager manhandle him to steal his food right off his plate because it makes her laugh and think “yes, he’s ruthless enough to take out a threat.”
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at Joel Miller and think he’d be a good patroller, and day by day, she worries about it more and more.

“Joel.” His name slips from her without thought, just the utterance of it stinging her chest.
He jerks to a stop, turning to look at her in surprise. Ellie can’t blame him, she’s barely said a word to him in almost two years.
Ellie tilts her head towards Tommy’s house, blowing out a breath. “Don’t bother.”
He looks between her and the house across the street, hands fidgeting with the paper he holds. “There oughta be another option. You shouldn’t –” He cuts himself off, but Ellie knows what he was gonna say. Years of distance don’t mean that she doesn’t still know him as well as she used to.
You shouldn’t have to be around me if you don’t want to.

AU where Tess rescues a badly injured little Ellie, and Joel disagrees, but he can't say no to Tess. Suddenly, Ellie lives with them, and unknowingly, they find themselves navigating a dangerous world to protect her.

To his relief—something loosens in his chest—Tess is safe and sound. The pale, bloodied kid she carries in her arms can't say the same. A slender thing, maybe five or six years old (though with the poor rations in the Quarantine Zone, Joel wouldn't be surprised if she passed for seven). She's skeletal, famished, with coppery hair and a round face. Her clothes are drenched in crimson, but FEDRA is still readable in black letters on the front. She doesn't seem unconscious. Her face contorted in pain, tears streaming down her cheeks.
