Summary
A boy lay upon a pallet of old blankets, chest rising shallowly, skin pale as wax. Ri knew, the moment he saw him, that this child was already walking backward toward death.
He did not say so.
The fox-like man watched him closely as Ri knelt, fingers light and practiced. Ri said nothing of what he saw in the boy’s skin, his eyes, the thinness of his spirit stretched to breaking.
There are beginnings and their are endings. This, the Medicine Sellers know best, and perhaps pains them most.
