    Summary

“Y’all should talk though, for real. I mean, what’re the odds of finding someone you’ve got so much in common with, given the givens?” A brief and funny grimace crossed Sarah’s face. “I mean, god, I really hope the odds are pretty low, given what you and Bucky have in common, otherwise what is the world coming to.”

“What, uh—what do you think we have in common?” asked Carol.

“Got superpowers you didn’t ask for, amnesia, missed a few decades of history, captured by the enemy…” said Sarah breezily, counting it all off on her fingers, before she sobered and added, gently now, “Lost your friends and family.”

Carol and Bucky have a distressingly lot of things in common, as people keep informing them, and the long, slow process of recovering the memories that were taken from them is one of those things. Maybe helping each other out with that could be the start of a beautiful friendship.

Alternatively: I just think Carol and Bucky should be friends. That's it, that's the fic.

    Summary

“I feel like literally, actually saving the world has given you unrealistic expectations. Most folks don’t need you to save the entire world on the regular, Sam," said Sarah.

“I hear you,” said Sam, rueful. He sighed and tipped his head back, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes. “But I still kind of feel like I have to save the entire world, if I’m carrying this shield.”

“Sam,” said Bucky, and Sam lowered his hands and opened his eyes to look at him, only to find himself the subject of Bucky’s staring problem yet again. “Let’s just go out there. See who we can help, how."

Taking on the Captain America mantle is all well and good, but unfortunately, it quickly becomes pretty obvious to Sam that carrying the shield doesn't guarantee a paying gig as a superhero—at least, not any kind of job that fits with the kind of Cap Sam wants to be. But when it comes down to it, all Sam wants to do is use the shield to help people, so paying gig or not, he and Bucky set out on the road to do just that, and to figure out what kind of superheroes they want to be. Slowly but surely, they figure out just what kind of partners they want to be too. (Hint: it is not 'just a couple of guys.')

“Today was a shitty day, Buck, but that plant? Agent Reese? They were good things,” said Sam.

“Woulda had a good thing anyway, even without that,” Bucky rasped, and turned his head to look at Sam, too much feeling in his eyes for Sam to be able to begin to identify it all. “One of my good things for the day, it’s always the same.”

“Yeah? What is it?” asked Sam, expecting the answer to be something like my freedom or my memories.

Instead, with a smile tucked away like an aching secret in the sweet creases around his eyes, Bucky said, “You.” And before Sam could even begin to recover from that, Bucky said, “Thank you.”

    Summary

Karli crosses her arms again. “Oh yeah? What’s more urgent than the Power Broker? And I swear, if you tell me it’s classified—”

“Bringing our best friends back home,” says Bucky.

“Your best—” Karli’s eyes go wide. “What, OG Captain America and…?”

“Natasha,” finishes Sam. “The Black Widow.”

“I thought they were dead,” she says. Her face scrunches up into a dubious expression. “Don’t tell me the tabloids are actually right and Steve Rogers has been on the moon.”

“Not on the moon, no, but they are in outer space, and they probably need an extraction from a sticky situation, or a ride back home,” says Sam. “So we’re taking a little space road trip to go pick ‘em up.”

On a space road trip to bring Steve and Natasha back home, Sam, Bucky, and Karli start to figure out just what kind of superheroes they want to be, and Sam and Bucky figure out what kind of life they want to build with a family that includes Steve and Natasha again.

    Summary

Sam’s not leaving this to paperwork. Like he and Bucky are gonna be carrying around whatever medical power of attorney paperwork Dr. Raynor is thinking of while they’re on missions. No, there’s a simple solution here: if next of kin and spouses are the only ones to get speedy and full recognition as the person to talk to when one of them is incapacitated or goddamn dying in a hospital, then he and Bucky are just gonna have to be that. Next of kin is out, there’s too damn much explanation required there, and too much potential paperwork too, so that leaves spouse.

    “We’re gonna get married.”

Dr. Raynor stops in the middle of the hallway. “What.”

When Bucky is seriously injured on a mission and Sam's denied any updates about his condition much less allowed to see him, Sam comes up with a plan: a let's-get-married plan. It's only practical. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with feelings, or being in love, it's just for legal reasons. Just a totally practical, partners thing.

“When I saw you fall, I realized that I was falling with you, my dear. I finally understood, too late, what I had denied to myself for so long, how absolutely I had debarred myself from something important, even the acknowledging of its possibility, while Tigana was still gone. The heart… has its own laws though, Catriana, and the truth is… the truth is that you are the law of mine. I knew it when I saw you in that window. In the moment before you leaped I knew that I loved you. Bright star of Eanna, forgive me the manner of this, but you are the harbor of my soul’s journeying.”

Sam has to stop then, his throat growing unaccountably tight as his eyes burn. He looks over at Bucky. His color’s a little better now, but his normally ridiculous, expressive face remains utterly still. If he were awake, would that love confession have made him go all soft and shiny-eyed, the way he sometimes gets when Sam catches him engrossed in reading an especially good book? Sam thinks it probably would have. The harbor of my soul’s journeying, thinks Sam, and the memory of the Wilson family boat rises up in his mind, the Paul & Darlene, swiftly followed by the memory of fixing it with Bucky, the first time they’d both been truly, wholly at ease with each other.

“Alright,” Sam says with a sigh, and picks up the book again. “These two better not die now that I’m all invested in their love story.”

    Summary

“Yet you haven’t sought any vengeance against HYDRA.”

Bucky laughed, incredulous and sad. “No. No, I—” he paused, worrying at his lower lip with his teeth. “If I ran into anyone trying to take me in again, I—I handled it. And I hit a few old HYDRA bases, took ‘em out so they couldn’t use them. But—no. Revenge?” He shook his head. “It’s too big. If I’d let it, it would have taken up all the room inside of me, and there wouldn’t be anything left of me. I had to let it go.”

T'Challa and Bucky get to know each other, and T'Challa learns how to let it go.
