Bilbo swallowed the lump in his throat. With weak knees he stumbled away from the bed, but then Thorin began talking in his sleep. He turned his head towards Bilbo and the hobbit was back at his side.
“Shshsh, I’m here. You are safe.” His words sounded weak, even to his own ears.
If Thorin’s condition didn’t improve soon, Bilbo would break down crying right here beside the king's sick-bed. And how unbefitting would that be for a Baggins of Bag End.
He choked on a laugh. “Look what you’ve done to me,” he huffed, squeezing his eyes shut against the tears.
“Bilbo.”
His gaze snapped up to Thorin's face, but he didn’t find the blue eyes looking back at him. The king was still unconscious.
Sighing, Bilbo resigned himself to a restless night, though he was done sitting on the sidelines.
With a few quick motions he divested himself of his coat before he climbed onto the makeshift bed. Mindful of Thorin’s many wounds, he settled down next to the larger body of the king.
