Absorbed as he is in his dwindling patience, he doesn't hear the footsteps approaching as his last grain of tolerance falls.
"Would you cease your relentless wailing already?" he snips out haughtily. "Your God isn't listening, and if they were, they've deemed you unworthy of answer, or perhaps even deserving of your plight. So spare the rest of us the sound."
Temper sizzling beneath the surface of his exhaustion, he leans his head back and huffs despite the creak it brings to his ribs.
What I would do to have a cigarette right now.
A shadow moves within the hall, and Feofan finally realizes there's someone near.

Summary
"Commander, if I may..." A sudden satin voice chimes in from his side.
The Doctor pauses, indignant, lifting his chin to see a figure in standard Fatui uniform approach. It is when he notes the precision of their steps and the grace of their gate he registers who has interrupted. That, and the lack of mask. Instead, glasses perch elegantly across a sharp face. Prescribed by none other than himself, in fact.
Since his little test subject has since been relocated beneath his command, Dottore has found it easy to identify him from the rest; almost hyper aware of his location amidst the masses. A strange sensation, one he hasn't bothered to analyze.
Or
Feofan's time spent as a Fatui agent beneath Dottore.

Summary
Pantalone clears the wilted flowers from last week, and sets the fresh bouquet down at the base of the gravestone. It was a plain slab, unmarked by the Fatui's usual ostentation, purchased quietly through a shell company so no one would trace the coin back to him. It was a little unfair, how Rosalyn had a whole piece of land dedicated to her, and Dottore had to settle with a little corner of the graveyard.
He had complained about the fact that Snezhnaya was only allowed one day of mourning for Rosalyn, not knowing that his dear Doctor would have it even worse.
The white lilies look almost absurd against the grey stone. He'd chosen them for their meaning, not their beauty. Purity. Renewed innocence. A joke, really, considering whose grave he was visiting.

“Oh?” Feofan taps the tabletop again, staving off his craving for a smoke.
“Often a doddering merchant tied to currency and ego, some scholars trace the name to ancient Enkanomiya, meaning ‘powerful in all things.’” Zandik’s voice trails off into a harsh laugh.
“And you find that…entertaining?”
“I find it ironic,” Zandik says, “because you came to me as a failed experiment and powerless in all things.”
Conversations from years of experiments and business ventures between Dottore and Pantalone across their developing partnership and relationship. From their first encounter as Feofan and Zandik, to their last.

Summary
It takes one faulty investment to ruin someone’s life, four weeks of planning to lure someone into a trap, and thirty-seven kicks to the stomach for pain to stop registering.
That’s a ten on Feofan’s pain scale, apparently. Under his mother’s calloused hands, he was certain he found the upper limit years ago, but pain—he’s come to learn—is a little like interest; it has a habit of compounding.

It was hardly strange for an investor to keep an eye on the things he has invested in, and Pulcinella had been quite adamant that developing a Forum Device for the Fatui to communicate would be essential for the timely dissemination of information.
A substantial amount of mora and a couple of months later, Pantalone finally acquires the device that grants him access to these forums. What he finds there is far more than what he initially expected.

Zandik hardly bats an eye at the non-sequitur. “Praising the Rooster? My, you’re full of surprises today.”
“Oh, you don’t even know the half of it.” The smile that teases Pantalone’s lips is slow and serpentine. “But credit where credit is due. It appears Pulcinella has managed to disguise a confessional as an occupational benefit.”
Pantalone and Zandik make thorough use of the Fatui’s newest amenities. They both get a little more than they bargained for in the exchange. Or: an ode to the Scarlet Proof artifact set.

But Pantalone knew he couldn't broach the topic bluntly, lest he bruise Dottore's pride. He had to approach things delicately.
Pantalone's gaze slid over to Dottore. "What point is there in spending hours laying in bed, if you're not getting any rest?"
Dottore smirked. "Why, I'm keeping you company, as any lover should." He continued, dismissively, "And it's not as if I need much sleep to begin with. If I wanted to, I could go months without."
He wasn't convinced.

His steps were light. Dottore closed the distance between them, with his back facing the Iriminsul.
If it's an interesting ending he wants, Pantalone can't think of anything more fitting.
He exhales, slow, and lets something in his chest settle into place. If was not grief, not yet, just the shape grief will eventually take. Then he bows. One hand drawn back against his ribs, the other extended, palm up, fingers loosely open, an invitation rather than a request. It is, he thinks, the most honest gesture he has offered anyone in decades.
