That perked Bruce's ears up, as he turned to face Booster. "A gag gift?"
The gold endowed "hero" smiled in a very unheroic way, Bruce could practically hear Ted shiver behind him.
"Oh. Buddy. Gag gifts are the best! You never got one?"
"I prefer all my gifts to be thought out and put with care, not something silly that isn't useful or means nothing to me."
"But it does mean something! Best friendship!" That last part he said while gripping Batman's shoulder, looking at the wall like there was some fake audience. As if—what like he's in some weird fanfiction or TV show?

Summary
Tony Stark and James Barnes don't get along. Maybe it was the whole "Hey, I killed your parents " thing, or the "I was once a villainous murderer" thing. Either way, they don't work together for sanity's sake. Not until now. Manhattan is under invasion, and differences must be put aside. Nothing goes to plan; Iron Man is down, and Tony's lungs are damaged by smoke inhalation. James, too, isn't in good shape, maybe because Tony stabbed him, maybe because something is very wrong with his prosthetic arm. Probably both.
They must traverse the city turned warzone to try to reach their fellow Avengers, but between them and help are traps, bombs, and teams of soldiers that herd further and further from help. Survival pushes the pair together, and slowly the walls between them break down, and trust grows. Tony starts to see beyond the past, to the fragile human behind the legend of the Winter Soldier.
Their bad day has turned into a bad week when they are taken captive by the enemy. An enemy whose plan is far more diabolical than any of them could have imagined. Now, they only have each other. What horrible fate is planned for them, and how will they survive? More importantly, how will they escape?

Despite the warnings of his guards, Tony simply rode forward and stopped just in front of the stranger.
He turned to his right-hand man, his best friend Rhodey. "Clothe him, give him some food."
To the man he said; "if you come with me, I'll give you work. You'll be fed and clothed and paid a fair wage."
The man scrambled up and Tony kept his eyes politely on his face, not glancing down to the fit body.
"Milord, thank you! Thank you, I- you won't regret it."
Rhodey threw the man a tunic and a pair of breeches and glanced at Tony with that exasperated look of his. "What's your name?"
"Barnes sir, James Barnes."

It doesn't take Tony long to notice that Bucky has a problem with choice. After his conditioning he apparently feels like he can't give Steve what he needs anymore, can't be the partner he deserves. So he only joins Steve and Tony on dates, staying away from anything sexual. It's frustrating for all of them.
Thankfully Tony is a genius. And letting Bucky backseat-dominate Steve through Tony might just work.
