    “I’m tired,” the little girl complains, skating from the group to hug Hollander’s knees.

    Hollander huffs a quiet laugh. “Grandma will be here soon,” he says, picking her up, sitting her perfectly on his hip. She lays her head on his shoulder, and they look so alike, it's startling.

    “Is that—Hollander,” Ilya says with disbelief. Hollander freezes, turning to look at Ilya. His brown eyes are wide, and he looks just as surprised as Ilya feels. “Is that your daughter?”

    Shane abruptly quits hockey and disappears off the face of the earth without a trace. When Ilya moves to the Centaurs, the last person he expects to see is Shane teaching a bunch of kids how to skate and play hockey with his daughter in tow.

    “Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.

    Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.

    “Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.

     

     

    Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.

    They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

    For every public image of Ilya - hockey cards, ads, promotion - the white wolf daemon was there. Standing behind Ilya in an action pose with her red eyes reflecting the light of the camera.

    When Shane and Ilya were together, the white wolf was there, showering Aiko with attention while Ilya did incredible things to Shane’s body.

    Shane did not realize how much of Ilya’s bravado was wrapped up in this image until that white wolf was gone.

    Missed you missed you missed you, he tries to convey with no mouth and no voice and all his heart. He’s reborn the way he died; the name of his Person nestled safe against his tongue.

    “Ilya,” Shane gasps, and his heart beats again.

    Shane Hollander dies the second Ilya Rozanov’s plane goes down. It just takes a while for his body to catch up.

    Thankfully, death isn't permanent — for either of them. Their tangled souls have been given a second chance at life, and they’re going to act like it. Which means never separating again. Ever.

    After all, death can’t part them. Why should hockey?

    Shane approaches the window slowly. He’s not on Earth. He’s very much not on Earth.

    He’s adrift in deep space, surrounded by an utter ocean of stars. It’s nothing like the view from Earth. He can tell exactly how far away every lonely flickering ball of gas is, and they’re very, very far away.

    On his left, a series of monitors come to life, one displaying a map.

    “You have arrived at Tau Ceti. Engine shutoff in 5 days, 13 hours, and 23 minutes. Current distance from Earth: 11.9 light years.”

    Fuck. He’s so fucked.

    When Shane finds himself in outer space, missing all his memories and armed with strict orders to solve the scientific conundrum threatening to extinguish all of humanity, he doesn't quite know where to begin. Good thing he's met a rock-shaped alien who might be able to help him... in more ways than one.
