He makes it almost to the foyer—the home stretch—when a voice speaks up behind him. “You’re not even going to stay for breakfast?”

Cecil’s fingers tapped once against his elbow. “And you agreed to that?”
A muscle feathered in Markus’s jaw. “He offered each of us something different. Most wanted conquest. A multiverse to rule.”
“And you?”
Markus looked down at his cuffed hands, flexing them slowly. When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.
“He told me I’d get to see you again.”
